Updated 6 October 2026
Bro is short for brother: a casual, friendly way to address someone, or a sarcastic or exasperated aside.
What bro can mean
1. A friendly address
Used the way you might say “mate” or “pal.” “Thanks bro” and “let’s go bro” are warm, and it does not mean the two people are related. Many women and non-binary people use it too.
2. An exasperated aside
A sentence that starts with “bro” is often disbelief: “bro what is this” or “bro, no.” It works as a very short “seriously?”, and people say it to themselves as much as to anyone.
3. “This guy…”
“Bro thinks he’s…” and “bro really said…” talk about a third person with irony. The person is a stand-in for someone who is overconfident or oblivious, and the tone is mockery. Separately, the “-bro” ending (gym bro, finance bro) names a stereotype.
How people use it on Instagram and Facebook
Instagram comments
“Bro 😭” or “bro what” under a funny or shocking Reel is a standard reaction. “Bro is cooking” means someone is doing something impressively well.
DMs and group chats
Sent between friends in almost every message, often with no meaning at all. “Bro” on its own can mean “look at this.”
Facebook comments
Rarer, mostly from younger users. On a brand’s page a customer’s “bro” is usually warm, not rude.
Gaming and fitness posts
Among gamers it is a teammate address, and in gym posts it joins other words to create stereotypes.

How to reply to bro
Questions people ask
Can you call a woman “bro”?
Among friends, yes, and many people use it for everyone in the group. Some women find it odd from a stranger. If you are replying to a customer, use their name instead.
What is the difference between bro and bruh?
“Bruh” is more of a reaction (“bruh…”) that signals disbelief, while “bro” works as an address and as a reaction. Most people use them interchangeably, but “bruh” leans more towards a sigh.
Is “bro” rude to a stranger?
It can be, especially if it is the first word of a sentence that disagrees with them: “bro, no” may land as a put-down. A plain “thanks bro” is generally friendly.
Should a brand account use “bro”?
Only if the whole account talks that way, such as a gaming or streetwear brand. Otherwise it can read as a try-hard. Using it only when replying to a customer who used it first is the safer rule.
