What does OMW mean?
OMW stands for “on my way.” It tells someone you have left, or are about to leave, and are heading to meet them. It is one of the most useful abbreviations in a plans chat.
Updated 6 October 2026
OMW means “on my way”: you are travelling to meet someone, or about to set off.
What OMW can mean
1. I’m travelling there now
The literal use, sent to a person waiting for you: “omw, 10 mins.” It answers the unspoken question “where are you?” with the least typing possible.
2. I’m about to leave
Everyone knows this one is stretched. Sent from the sofa, “omw” often means “I’m getting my shoes on.” If someone says it with no time attached, treat it as hopeful.
3. “OMW to…” as a joke
Followed by an action, it announces a plan with mock seriousness: “omw to eat the whole tray.” Nobody is going anywhere; the phrase just sets up the punchline.
How people use it on Instagram and Facebook
DMs and group chats
The home of the literal meaning. Plans for a meet-up, a pick-up or a delivery nearly always include an “omw” from the person travelling, often with a time in minutes.
Facebook Messenger and Marketplace
Buyers and sellers arranging a hand-over use it to say they are on the way to the agreed spot. Sellers often get “omw” and then a long silence, so a time helps.
Comments and captions
Almost always the joking form: “omw to book flights” under a travel Reel, or a caption that says “omw to my next adventure” over a picture of a suitcase.

How to reply to OMW
Questions people ask
How long does “omw” mean I should wait?
There is no fixed time. People send it when they are leaving, mid-journey or still at home. If the time matters, ask “how many minutes?” and you will usually get a straight answer.
What is the difference between OMW and BRB?
OMW is about arriving somewhere: you are coming to the person. BRB (“be right back”) is about leaving a chat or a task and returning to it shortly.
Does a customer sending “omw” to a shop mean they will arrive soon?
Usually yes, they are heading to the shop or the collection point. A reply that confirms the address and closing time is more helpful than a thumbs-up.
