Slang meaning
What is a situationship?
A situationship is a romantic connection that has not been defined. You spend time together and may be physically close, but neither of you has called it a relationship, so nobody is sure what it is.
Updated 6 October 2026
A situationship is a romantic or sexual connection with no label, no clear future and no agreed rules.
What situationship can mean
1. An undefined romantic arrangement
The main sense. Two people act like a couple some of the time, perhaps with regular dates, texts and nights together, but they have not agreed what it is. It lacks the commitments of a defined relationship, such as exclusivity or meeting each other’s friends.
2. One person wants more
Often one of them quietly hopes it turns into a relationship while the other likes it as it is. People use the word in this sense when they feel stuck: “it’s not a relationship, it’s a situationship, and I’m tired of guessing.”
3. A chosen, casual setup
Some people describe their arrangement this way on purpose. If both of them want something relaxed with no pressure to label it, the word is just a fair description rather than a complaint.
How people use it on Instagram and Facebook
Captions and Stories
Usually a joke or a vent: “in a situationship with my gym membership” or “situationship season again”. A serious Story about the real thing tends to be vague, since the other person may be watching.
Comments and replies
People tag friends under relationship memes with “us in our situationship” or leave advice on posts asking where someone stands. Sympathetic replies outnumber sarcastic ones.
DMs with close friends
It is how people explain a muddled romance to a friend without needing a long backstory. “Are we a situationship?” can also be asked to the other person, but it is a brave message to send.

How to reply to situationship
Where it comes from
The word blends “situation” and “relationship”. It was in use by the mid-2010s, and Wiktionary’s earliest cited example is a 2016 book. It has since become a staple of dating talk online, though exact first use is not well documented.
Questions people ask
How do I know I’m in a situationship?
Common signs are no label, plans made at the last minute, not meeting each other’s friends and family, and avoiding the question of where it is going. One sign alone proves nothing. The pattern, and how you feel about it, matters most.
What is the difference between a situationship and friends with benefits?
Friends with benefits is explicitly casual and physical, and both people agreed to that. A situationship is vaguer: there are often romantic feelings or couple-like behaviour, and nobody has said what the arrangement is.
How is it different from talking or the talking stage?
The talking stage is a short, early phase of getting to know someone. A situationship has gone on longer, with the label still missing. It can feel like the talking stage that never ended.
Is a situationship always bad?
No. It suits people who want something light and have said so. It becomes a problem when one person wants commitment and the other keeps things unclear. The honest fix is a direct conversation, not a guess.
