Slang meaning
What does ghosting mean?
Ghosting is when someone stops replying and disappears without saying why. It started as a dating term, but people now use it for friends, job applications and customers too.
Updated 6 October 2026
Ghosting means suddenly cutting off all contact with someone, with no explanation and no goodbye.
What ghosting can mean
1. Vanishing on someone you were talking to
The main meaning. You were chatting daily, then the replies stop and the person never explains. It is not the same as a slow reply or a fading friendship. The giveaway is a clean break: messages unanswered, stories no longer viewed, sometimes a block.
2. Disappearing in a professional setting
Candidates who stop answering a recruiter, or employers who go silent after an interview, are both described as ghosting. Customers do it too: they ask about a price, get the answer, and never write again. People tend to use the word more loosely here, to mean “no reply at all”.
3. Ghost followers
A related use on Instagram is the “ghost follower”: an account that follows you but never likes, watches or replies. That is a different thing from ghosting a person. Nobody has been dropped, it is just a very quiet audience.
How people use it on Instagram and Facebook
DMs and group chats
Mostly in the past tense and about someone else: “he ghosted me after our second date.” Friends pass it around as a shorthand for a whole story. Keep in mind that Instagram puts messages from people you don't follow into a Requests folder, so silence is not always a choice.
Comments under relationship and dating posts
Posts about modern dating draw long threads of “I've been ghosted” stories. The word is used both as a sympathy opener and as a way to say “you're not alone”.
Business and Marketplace chats
Sellers on Facebook Marketplace use it for buyers who ask “is this still available?”, agree a time, then never show or write again. It is a common complaint rather than a formal term.

How to reply to ghosting
Questions people ask
Is being left on read the same as ghosting?
Not quite. Leaving someone on read means opening a message and not answering it, which can be one slow day. Ghosting is a pattern: the conversation stops for good and no explanation is ever given.
Is ghosting ever acceptable?
People disagree. Many say it is fine to disappear on someone who is harassing you or making you feel unsafe, and unkind in nearly every other case. A short “I don't think this is working” is usually the kinder choice.
What is the difference between ghosting and breadcrumbing?
A ghost goes silent completely. Breadcrumbing is the opposite problem: someone sends just enough, an occasional like or vague message, to keep you interested without ever committing.
Does a slow reply from a business count as ghosting?
Usually customers call it that only after days of silence. Within a day, most people read a slow reply as busy. A fast acknowledgement, even an automatic one, tends to stop the feeling that you have been ignored.
