What does mewing mean?

Mewing is a trend where you rest your whole tongue against the roof of your mouth, supposedly to sharpen the jawline. Online it is also a joke: someone is “mewing” when they pose with a serious face.

Updated 6 October 2026

Mewing is a tongue-posture trend that claims to reshape the jaw; online it is also a joke about posing.

Tone: joking, sometimes mocking, occasionally earnest

What mewing can mean

1. A tongue-posture routine

People rest the tongue flat against the roof of the mouth, keep the lips closed and breathe through the nose, with the aim of changing the shape of the jaw and face. Videos show before-and-after photos, usually with different lighting and angles.

2. A meme about looking serious

In comments, “mewing” is shorthand for someone posing with a tense, closed-mouth jaw, and “he’s mewing” is a joke about vanity or confidence. A finger pressed to the lips is the gesture that goes with it, and it can be a comment on a person who is acting “too cool.”

3. A cat’s sound

Unconnected, “mewing” is also the plain-English sound of a cat or a kitten. If the post is about a pet, that is all it means.

How people use it on Instagram and Facebook

  • Instagram Reels and comments

Under a selfie or a gym photo, a comment like “mewing streak?” teases the person about posing. Under a tutorial Reel it is a genuine question.

  • Captions and Stories

People use it self-mockingly: “day 40 of mewing, no change yet.” The joke usually works because the effect is so hard to see.

  • Facebook posts and parent groups

Parents ask what it is after hearing their teenager say it. They often also ask whether it is safe, which is a fair question for a dentist.

How to reply to mewing

Where it comes from

The name comes from two British orthodontists, a father and his son, who promoted a set of ideas about tongue posture and facial growth called orthotropics. The word “mewing” is named after the family. By 2019 a Guardian article was already describing it as a YouTube craze.

Questions people ask

Does mewing work?

There is no solid evidence that it reshapes an adult’s jaw. Orthodontic bodies and reviews say the same thing, and the visible changes people post are often down to lighting, posture, weight or the angle of the camera. A dentist or orthodontist can answer questions about your own teeth and bite.

Is mewing harmful?

Resting the tongue gently is harmless, but pushing hard or clenching the jaw for hours can cause aches, and no one should treat it as a replacement for dental care. If you have jaw pain or bite problems, see a dentist.

What does “mogging” have to do with it?

“Mogging” is the related slang for outshining someone with your looks, and mewing is often named as a way to “mog.” Both come from online communities where looks are ranked, and both can be unkind. Treat them with caution.

Why do people put a finger on their lips?

It is a joke gesture that means “I’m mewing,” or “quiet.” How it started is not well documented. In comments, it signals that the speaker is playing along with the meme.
