Slang meaning
What does R mean?
In texts and DMs, “r” is short for “are,” as in “how r u?” or “r we still on?” It is one of the oldest text shortcuts, and it almost always sits next to “u,” which means “you.”
Updated 6 October 2026
R is a one-letter shortcut for “are”: “r u coming?” means “are you coming?”
What r can mean
1. “Are”
The everyday meaning. It appears in questions (“r u there?”), in statements (“they r late”) and in pairs such as “r u ok” and “how r u”. The letter is pronounced like the word, which is why it works.
2. The “r/” in Reddit
If you see “r/” followed by a name, as in a link to a Reddit community, the r stands for “subreddit.” People paste these into Instagram and Facebook comments to point to a thread.
3. A rating or the letter itself
In film listings, R is a rating for restricted viewing in some countries, and in a spelled-out message “r” can simply be the letter. If there is no “u” nearby and no link, check which of these is meant.
How people use it on Instagram and Facebook
DMs and Story replies
Mostly in quick check-ins: “r u ok?” or “r u free later?” It reads as friendly and fast, not careless.
Comments
Appears in short questions under posts, such as “r these still in stock?” On a shop’s account it is a clue that the writer is texting from a phone, not writing formally.
Facebook Marketplace messages
Buyers often open with “r u still selling this?” It is a standard first message, and a short “yes, still available” is the right reply.

Questions people ask
What does “r u” mean?
“Are you.” It starts a question: “r u coming?”, “r u serious?”, “r u okay?” “U” is the shortcut for “you.”
Is “r” the same as “ur”?
No. “R” replaces “are,” while “ur” replaces “your” or “you’re.” Mixing them up is a common typo: “ur welcome” should be “you’re welcome.”
Should a business write “r u” to customers?
Better not. Short forms in a reply can make a business look careless. You can mirror how the customer writes, but write out full words in your own messages.
What does it mean when someone just sends “r”?
Usually a typo, or the start of a message that was cut off. A reply like “Did you mean ‘are’?” or just “Sorry, what was that?” keeps it light.
