What does red flag mean?
A red flag is a warning sign: a behaviour or detail that suggests trouble ahead. It is most common in dating, but people also spot red flags in jobs, sellers, landlords and friendships.
Updated 6 October 2026
A red flag is a warning sign that something, often a person or deal, may be a bad idea.
What red flag can mean
1. A warning sign in dating
A habit or remark that suggests a person may be controlling, dishonest or careless with feelings. Examples people name include flaring up when told no, speaking badly about all their exes, or getting intense very quickly. A red flag is a reason to look closer, not proof.
2. A warning sign anywhere
The wider meaning is older than dating talk. A buyer on a marketplace may notice red flags in a listing, such as a price that is too good, a seller who will not answer questions, or someone asking for payment in advance.
3. A joke or confession
People also use it playfully: “my red flag is I never reply to voice notes.” It admits a flaw with a laugh and often comes with the 🚩 emoji.
How people use it on Instagram and Facebook
Instagram comments and Reels
Under dating, relationship or scam-awareness clips, comments list red flags in the video or add their own: “the way he ignored the waiter 🚩.” Whole Reels are built as lists of them.
DMs and group chats
People send a screenshot of a message to a friend with “red flag??” and ask for a second opinion. The reply is often a verdict on whether it is serious or a beige flag.
Facebook groups and Marketplace
Neighbourhood and buying-and-selling groups use the phrase to point out suspicious behaviour, such as a seller refusing to let anyone view an item.

How to reply to red flag
Where it comes from
Red has long signalled danger or a stop. In motor racing a red flag stops a session, for instance. “Red flag” as a figure of speech for a warning sign is well established in everyday English, and its use in dating talk, along with the green-flag opposite, has become very common on social media.
Questions people ask
What are green flags and beige flags?
A green flag is a good sign, such as someone who keeps their promises. A beige flag is a harmless but odd quirk, like eating the same lunch every day. A red flag is a concern.
Is a red flag a dealbreaker?
Not automatically. It is a prompt to pay attention and ask questions. Several together, or one that touches safety or honesty, count for more than a single quirk.
Is it fair to call a person “a red flag”?
Sometimes, but it is a harsh label to put on someone in public. Naming a behaviour (“that comment was a red flag”) is fairer than judging the whole person, and it keeps comment threads calmer.
Can a brand talk about red flags?
Yes, in helpful content such as “red flags in a fake giveaway.” Avoid using it as a tease at a named customer or another account.
