What is an Instagram business account?
A business account is one of Instagram’s two professional account types, the one Instagram suggests for retailers, local businesses, brands, organisations and service providers. It adds insights, ads and contact options, opens the door to business tools, and can be switched to Creator or back to personal at any time.

A business account is Instagram’s professional account type for shops, brands, organisations and service providers, with insights, ads and contact options.
What a business account gives you
- A Contact button near the top of the profile, offering directions, a phone number and an email address, so customers can reach you without a DM.
- A category label below the profile picture, such as Florist or Bike shop, which tells visitors what you do before they read the bio. You can display or hide it.
- The professional dashboard, with insights on every post, Reel and Story, and on who your followers are and when they’re active.
- A secondary inbox with Primary, General and Requests folders, and requests you can sort by date received or by top accounts.
- Ads: boost a post from the app, or build a campaign in Meta’s ad tools that runs on Instagram and Facebook.
- Connections to schedulers, shared inboxes and DM auto-reply apps through Meta’s API.
- Meta Business Suite, if you want Instagram and a Facebook Page side by side with one inbox.
A Facebook Page is optional: Instagram’s setup steps let you skip that connection. A business account works without one, and apps can connect through the version of Meta’s API that uses Instagram Login. Instagram does recommend connecting your business Page to get the most out of its business tools, and you would link one when you want to manage both together, or when a tool is built on the Facebook Login version, which only serves Page-linked accounts.
Business or creator: the real differences
Less separates the two types than many guides suggest. Both are public, both get insights, ads and the Contact button, and Meta’s developer documentation covers both under professional accounts, so auto-reply and scheduling apps work with either. What differs is who Instagram has in mind:
| Situation | Better fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| A shop, salon, café or studio with a name customers know | Business | Instagram suggests Business for retailers, local businesses and service providers |
| A charity, club or school | Business | Organisations are on Instagram’s list for Business |
| An artist, influencer or public figure | Creator | Instagram suggests Creator for public figures, content producers, artists and influencers |
| A coach, tutor or freelancer whose face is the brand | Either | Both types have the tools you need, so pick by how you present yourself and switch if something is missing |
Music is one practical difference to check. Instagram’s Help Center says the music in its licensed library is meant for personal, non-commercial use, so certain business accounts and certain types of posts don’t have access to it, and it may not be available in some countries or regions either. If your account can’t use it, you may be able to use Meta’s Sound Collection: over 14,000 royalty-free songs and sounds for Reels and Stories that Meta says can be used for commercial purposes such as ads. If songs you used before are missing, the account type may be the reason.
Mistakes to avoid
- Switching to look official. A business account adds tools, not a badge; the blue check comes from verification, which is separate.
- Choosing a vague category. “Bakery” tells a visitor far more than a broad label such as “Shopping & retail”.
- Listing contact details nobody answers. A phone number that rings out costs more trust than no number at all.
- Forgetting message requests. People who don’t follow you yet start in Requests, and for a shop that’s often where the new customers are.
- Writing “DM for price” and then answering hours later. If prices live in DMs, reply quickly or automatically, or the question turns into a lost sale.
An example
A shoe repair shop switches to a business account and sets its category. The Contact button now offers directions and a phone number, and “where are you?” stops filling its DMs.
Questions people ask
Do I need a Facebook Page for an Instagram business account?
No. A business account works on its own, and apps can connect to it through Instagram Login. Link a Page if you want to manage both together in Meta Business Suite, or if you use a tool built on the Facebook Login version of Meta’s Instagram API.
Why can’t I find some songs on my business account?
Instagram’s Help Center says that, to keep licensed music from being used commercially, certain business accounts and certain types of posts don’t have access to its licensed music library, which may also be unavailable in some countries or regions. If your account can’t use it, Meta’s Sound Collection has over 14,000 royalty-free songs and sounds for Reels and Stories, and Meta says they can be used commercially, for example in ads.
Does a business account reach more people than a creator account?
Instagram’s help articles don’t say either type reaches more people. They separate the two by who they suit, so choose the one whose tools you’ll use and judge reach from your insights after a few weeks.
Can I switch from business to creator later?
Yes, whenever you like, and back again. Your followers and posts stay put. Apps built on Meta’s API support both types, so moving between them doesn’t rule any out; moving to a personal account does.
Does a business account come with a blue check?
No. The badge comes from verification, which is separate from account type. Switching to Business changes the tools you have, not how your name appears in search or comments.
