What is an Instagram creator account?
A creator account is the Instagram professional account type for public figures, content producers, artists and influencers. It’s public, it comes with insights, ads and a Contact button, and it suits accounts where a person, not a company, is what followers come for.

A creator account is the Instagram professional account type for public figures, artists, influencers and content producers. It’s public and includes insights.
What comes with a creator account
- Insights in the professional dashboard: reach and engagement for each post, Reel and Story, plus who your followers are.
- A category label below the profile picture, such as Artist or Digital creator, which you can display or hide.
- A Contact button for an email address, phone number or directions, useful for booking enquiries.
- Ads and boosted posts that run on Instagram and Facebook.
- Branded content tools, including the paid partnership label that names the brand on a sponsored post.
- Instagram’s ways for fans to pay creators, such as subscriptions and gifts, once the account meets each tool’s eligibility rules, which vary by country.
- Connections to schedulers, analytics apps and DM auto-reply tools through Meta’s API.
Much of that list is shared with business accounts. The difference is emphasis: the creator type is for accounts built around a person, and Instagram’s fan payments and partnership tools are designed with those accounts in mind.
Creator or business?
Instagram’s own advice is short: Creator for public figures, content producers, artists and influencers; Business for retailers, local businesses, brands, organisations and service providers. The harder cases sit in between.
- A coach, tutor or photographer who sells their own time: Creator works well, because followers come for the person, and you keep the Contact button and automation tools.
- A creator who launches a product line: staying Creator is fine while you’re the face of it. Consider Business once the shop has its own name, staff or a Facebook Page.
- A musician or dancer who relies on popular songs: check the music picker after any switch, because Meta says certain business accounts don’t have access to its licensed music library.
- Someone who wants the account private some days: Instagram says professional accounts can’t be set to private, so keep a separate personal account for that.
Since Instagram lets you change type whenever you like, the choice is easy to test. Switch, use the account for a couple of weeks, and switch back if a tool you need is missing.
Myths about creator accounts
- “Creator accounts can’t use third-party tools.” Older guides said so, but Meta’s current developer documentation covers professional accounts, Creator and Business alike, for comments, publishing, insights and DMs.
- “You need thousands of followers to switch.” Instagram’s setup article asks for no follower count. Thresholds apply to particular features instead, such as starting a channel, which needs a public account with more than 1,000 followers.
- “Brand deals need a business account.” Creators tag a brand with the paid partnership label, and the brand can then see how the post performed.
- “A creator account is just a business account with a different name.” The core tools match, but each type is set up for a different kind of account, and the licensed music library is restricted for certain business accounts.
An example
A watercolour artist switches her personal account to Creator and chooses Artist as her category. Her sponsored post for a paper brand carries the paid partnership label, and a DM tool sends her class timetable to anyone who comments CLASS.
Questions people ask
Can I use auto-reply or scheduling apps with a creator account?
Yes. Meta’s developer documentation covers Instagram professional accounts, which includes Creator as well as Business, so comment-to-DM tools, schedulers and analytics apps can connect to either type.
Should a small business owner pick creator instead of business?
It works if you are what you sell: a coach, a tutor, a photographer. You keep insights, ads, the Contact button and automation tools. If the account speaks for a shop or brand with staff and products, Instagram’s suggestion is Business.
How do I mark a sponsored post on a creator account?
Add Instagram’s paid partnership label and tag the brand, on a post, Reel or Story. Instagram’s branded content policies expect it whenever a brand has paid you or given you something of value, and advertising rules in many countries call for clear disclosure too.
Can a creator account be private?
No. Instagram’s Help Center says professional accounts can’t be set to private, and that switching a private account to professional makes it public. If you need a private space, keep a separate personal account; Instagram says you can have up to 10 accounts logged in at once and switch between them.
Can I switch from creator to business later?
Yes. Instagram’s Help Center says you can change your professional account type at any time. Check the songs you use afterwards, since Meta says certain business accounts don’t have access to its licensed music library.
