What is an Instagram personal account?
A personal account is an Instagram account that is neither a Business nor a Creator account. Meta’s help and developer pages mostly describe it by contrast: it is what you return to when you leave a professional account, and the type that apps built on Meta’s APIs cannot connect to. Here is what those pages say.

An Instagram account that is neither Business nor Creator. You can switch back to it from a professional account, but apps built on Meta’s APIs cannot connect to it.
How Meta describes a personal account
Meta does not give a long definition. Its help article for leaving a professional account is titled “Switch back to a personal Instagram account from an Instagram professional account”, and the page’s summary line says to switch back to a personal profile “from a business or creator account”. So Business and Creator sit on one side, and the personal account is the one that has neither.
Meta’s developer documentation draws the same line from the other side. It says an Instagram professional account “can represent a business or creator”, and that the Instagram Platform, Meta’s set of APIs for apps, is built for those accounts.
Personal is not the same as private. Personal is the account type; public or private is about who can see the account. Instagram’s Help Center says business profiles aren’t able to make their accounts private, and that to make a business account private you first switch back to a personal account. Meta’s note on switching back talks about what happens if “you have a public account”, and Instagram’s August 2020 Reels announcement describes both a public and a private account. Check your privacy settings in the app, especially before you change type.
What changes when you go back to personal
Meta’s help article says that if you have a professional account you can switch back to a personal one at any time. A note in it warns that you lose access to some Meta business tools, naming Meta Business Suite and Meta Ads Manager, and adds that if you have a public account you still have your dashboard and insights.
Two things follow. The switch can be undone, so trying a professional account is not a one-way decision. And the note says “some” tools, not all, so check your own account for anything else you rely on before you confirm. Instagram’s setup article adds that you’ll no longer have access to ads, and that any Facebook Page connected to your professional account will be disconnected.
The app route in Meta’s article runs through the steps below. Menu names change, so follow your own screen if it differs.
- Open your profile, then the menu at the top right. The article says you may also need to tap Settings.
- Tap Account type and tools, then Account type, then Switch account type.
- Tap Switch to personal account, then Switch to personal to confirm.
On instagram.com from a computer, the article’s route is More, then Settings, then Business tools and controls or Creator tools and controls, depending on your profile type. Then click Switch to personal account and Switch back to confirm.
Why apps and automation need a professional account
Meta’s Instagram Platform documentation says it is a collection of APIs for Instagram professional accounts, including business and creator accounts, and that your app users “must have an Instagram professional account”. It describes two ways for an app to log people in: Instagram Login, for professional accounts without a linked Facebook Page, and Facebook Login, for professional accounts linked to a Page. Both serve professional accounts. Neither serves a personal one.
Depending on the setup, apps use those APIs to hold conversations, moderate comments, send private replies, publish content and ads, and read insights. DMFast works through them, which is why it connects Instagram professional accounts and Facebook Pages but not personal Instagram accounts. The same requirement applies to any app built on Meta’s official APIs.
Tip: If an app will not connect, check the account type before anything else. Because Meta says you can switch back at any time, you can test whether a tool is worth it without giving up your personal account for good.
An example
A piano teacher posts short practice tips from a personal account. The reply tool she wants to try asks for a professional account, so she switches under Account type and tools, and can switch back if it is not for her.
Questions people ask
What is a personal account on Instagram?
It is an account that is neither a Business nor a Creator account. Meta’s help article treats it as the type you can switch back to from a professional account at any time.
Is a personal account the same as a private account?
No. Personal describes the account type; private describes who can see the account. Instagram’s Help Center says business profiles can’t be made private, so to make one private you switch back to a personal account first. Meta’s note on switching back refers to public accounts. Check your privacy settings in the app.
Can I use DMFast or another auto-reply app on a personal account?
No. Meta’s developer documentation says people using its Instagram APIs must have a professional account, and DMFast works through those APIs. Switch the account type first. Meta says you can switch back later.
What do I lose if I switch back to a personal account?
Meta’s note says you lose access to some Meta business tools, such as Meta Business Suite and Meta Ads Manager. If your account is public, the same note says you keep your dashboard and insights. Instagram’s setup article adds that you’ll no longer have access to ads and that a connected Facebook Page is disconnected.
How do I switch back to a personal account?
In the app, Meta’s article lists Account type and tools, then Account type, then Switch account type, then Switch to personal account, then a confirmation. Menu names change, so follow your own screen.
