Mirror text generator
Mirror text is writing flipped from left to right, the way words look in a mirror: type below and copy a version like ɿoɿɿim ɒ ni ƨiʜƚ bɒɘЯ. It isn’t a font, and Unicode has no mirrored alphabet. The generator writes your text backwards and swaps each lopsided letter for a look-alike from another script, such as Я for R, so the result is ordinary text you can paste almost anywhere.

Where they work
| Where | Works? | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Instagram bio and name | Partly | Both fields take mirror text. A few of the borrowed letters, such as ꟻ, ꟼ and ꓘ, joined Unicode later than the rest and can show as boxes on older phones. |
| Instagram username | Doesn't work | A name spelled backwards in plain letters can be a valid handle, but mirrored shapes like Я and ɘ fall outside the a–z, 0–9, full stops and underscores that handles allow. |
| Comments, captions and DMs | Partly | It pastes and displays on Instagram and Facebook alike, with the same caveat about older phones. Readers have to decode it letter by letter, so keep it to a line. |
| Hashtags | Doesn't work | A reversed word is a different tag, and borrowed letters like Я make a tag nobody uses. Keep tags facing forwards, in plain letters. |
| Facebook profile name | Doesn't work | Facebook doesn’t accept names that mix characters from different languages. Mirror text mixes Latin, Cyrillic, Greek, Cherokee and more, so it can’t be a profile name. |
| Printing and iron-on transfers | Doesn't work | These characters only imitate a reflection, and numbers don’t flip at all. For anything printed, flip the real text with the mirror or flip-horizontal option in your software or printer settings. |
How the generator fakes a reflection
A mirror does two things to a word: it reverses the order of the letters and flips the shape of each one. The generator copies both steps. It writes your text backwards, then replaces every letter that isn’t symmetrical with the closest mirrored shape it can find. Letters that look the same in a mirror, such as A, H, M, O, T, V, W, X and lowercase i, l, o, v, w and x, stay as they are.
| Letter | Mirrored | Where the stand-in comes from |
|---|---|---|
| R | Я | Cyrillic capital ya, a letter of the Russian alphabet |
| N | И | Cyrillic capital i |
| E and e | Ǝ and ɘ | Latin reversed E and small reversed e |
| F and P | ꟻ and ꟼ | Latin epigraphic letters, made for old inscriptions |
| L | ⅃ | Reversed sans-serif capital L, a maths symbol |
| B and D | ᙠ and ᗡ | Canadian syllabics, a writing system for Indigenous languages in Canada |
| G | Ꭾ | Cherokee letter he |
| J | Ⴑ | Georgian capital san |
| K | ꓘ | Lisu letter kha |
| S and s | Ƨ and ƨ | Latin letter tone two |
| a and r | ɒ and ɿ | Phonetic letters: turned alpha and reversed r with fishhook |
| b, d, p, q | d, b, q, p | Each other: a mirror swaps b with d and p with q |
| ? | ⸮ | Reversed question mark |
What a mirror generator can’t fake
Some characters have no mirrored twin to borrow, so the generator settles for something close or leaves them alone. Check for these before you post:
- h becomes ʜ, a small capital H. It has no direction to flip, so it passes in a line but looks different up close.
- Z and z stay as they are, so their diagonal still runs the normal way.
- Q turns into Ọ, an O with a dot under it standing in for the tail, and g, j and y borrow ϱ, į and γ from Greek and Latin.
- Numbers keep their shape but swap places: 2026 comes out as 6202, and “Open 9 to 5” becomes “5 oƚ 9 nɘqO”, so a date or phone number turns into a different one.
- Emoji made of several parts break apart. A thumbs-up with a skin tone, 👍🏽, comes out as a lone colour swatch followed by a yellow 👍.
Tip: Mirror the words first, then add emoji and any numbers that matter in normal text after you paste.
Mirror text or upside-down text?
A mirror flips a line from left to right. Upside-down text turns it half a circle, which reverses the order as well but also flips every letter top to bottom, so it needs a different set of stand-ins, such as ɐ for a and ɥ for h. Hold mirror text up to a mirror, or turn your phone round for upside-down text, and each one reads normally.
| Original | Mirror | Upside down |
|---|---|---|
| Read this in a mirror | ɿoɿɿim ɒ ni ƨiʜƚ bɒɘЯ | ɹoɹɹᴉɯ ɐ uᴉ sᴉɥʇ pɐǝꓤ |
| hello | ollɘʜ | ollǝɥ |
| AMBULANCE | ƎƆИA⅃UᙠMA | ƎƆN∀˥∩ᗺW∀ |
| 2026 | 6202 | 9ᄅ0ᄅ |
Plain backwards text, like olleh for hello, is a third option. It only changes the order, so it uses ordinary letters and works anywhere plain text does, even in a username if the name is free.
Real mirror writing: ambulances, transfers and selfies
Mirror writing has everyday jobs. Many ambulances carry the word AMBULANCE reversed across the front, so drivers ahead read it the right way round in their rear-view mirrors. Iron-on transfer paper that goes face down onto fabric has to be printed mirrored, or the design comes out backwards.
Those jobs need a true reflection of every stroke, which look-alike characters can’t give. Flip the real text instead:
- In Microsoft Word, put the text in a text box, open Format Shape, go to Effects and set the 3-D Rotation X value to 180°.
- Many printers’ settings screens have a mirror image or flip horizontal option, meant for transfer paper.
- In a photo or design app, save the design as an image and flip it horizontally before you print.
Phones play the same trick with the front camera. The preview behaves like a mirror, so the slogan on your T-shirt looks backwards while you line up a selfie, even though the saved photo may read normally.
Who can read mirror text
Mirror text is a small puzzle by design, and that cuts both ways. Readers have to decode it, search can’t match it to anything, and a screen reader meets letters from several scripts in reverse order. Depending on the reader, it may spell them out, read nonsense or skip what it can’t name.
- Use it for a short line people can enjoy working out, not for dates, prices or instructions.
- Put the real message in plain text next to it, so nobody misses the point.
- Leave it out of your name if you want to be found: nobody searches for ɘmɒИ.
Questions people ask
How do I make mirror text for a T-shirt or iron-on transfer?
Don’t use these characters for print. Type the design normally, then flip the whole thing with your software’s or printer’s mirror option, so every stroke, digit and letter reverses. The Unicode version only approximates a reflection, and letters like Z, plus every number, would come out the wrong way.
Why does writing look backwards in my selfies?
The front camera preview is mirrored so it feels like looking in a mirror. On an iPhone, the Mirror Front Camera switch in Settings > Camera decides whether saved photos keep that flip; with it off, text in the saved photo reads normally. Many Android camera apps have a similar setting.
Is mirror text the same as backwards text?
Not quite. Backwards text only reverses the order of ordinary letters, so hello becomes olleh. Mirror text also flips the shapes, giving ollɘʜ. Backwards text is easier to read and works in more places, including usernames; mirror text looks more like a real reflection.
Can I use mirror text in my Instagram username?
Only as a backwards spelling in plain letters. Handles are limited to a–z, 0–9, full stops and underscores, so shapes such as Я, ɘ and ꟻ are refused. Mirror text fits in your name or bio instead.
