Answer Instagram comments with a private reply

A private reply is a DM sent in answer to a comment. Instagram lets a professional account send one for each comment on its posts, Reels, Stories, Lives and ads, within 7 days of the comment, and nothing more until the person answers. Below are 13 for the comments that deserve one, from a phone number posted in public to a giveaway winner, with notes on when each should go out.

  • A question that needs details first

Thanks for asking under the post! The answer depends on a couple of things, so I've brought it over here. Roughly what size do you need, and when would you want it by?

Instagram won't let you add a second message until they reply, so this one asks for exactly what your answer depends on and nothing more.

  • A complaint about a visit

I'm really sorry your visit wasn't what it should have been, and thank you for telling us. Could you let me know which day you came in? I'd like to look into it properly and put it right.

Reply briefly under the comment as well, so other readers can see you responded. The private reply is where the details go.

  • A phone number left in the comments

Hi, thanks for getting in touch! We saw your number in the comments, so we'll take that comment down to keep it private and carry on here instead. Would you rather we call, or keep it to messages?

Send this first, then delete the comment from your post so the number is no longer on show. Asking how they'd like to be contacted leaves them in charge.

  • Where we are, for a home-based business

Hi! You asked where we are. We work from a home studio, so the full address goes out with each booking rather than in the comments. We're in {area}. Would you like to book a visit?

Suits home bakers, tutors and anyone who works from home. The area answers the real question, which is usually “is it near me?”

  • Someone commented “DM me”

You asked for a DM, so here it is 👋 This reply was sent automatically, and someone from the team will pick up your answer. What would you like to know?

They asked to be contacted, so the message only has to find out what about. Set DM and “message me” as the words and most versions of the request are covered.

  • Under an old post, about something that's sold

Hi! That piece sold a while ago, I'm afraid, but I have two similar ones in the studio right now. Want me to send you photos? Just reply YES.

The 7 days run from the comment, not from the post, so a comment on a post from last year can still get a private reply this week.

  • A question under an ad

Hi, it's the team behind the ad you commented on! Happy to help here. Are you asking about prices, sizes or delivery? Tell me which and I'll send the details.

Ads reach people who don't follow you yet, and a private reply to a non-follower lands in their message requests. Naming the ad in the first line tells them why a stranger is writing.

  • A how-to question too long for a comment

Great question, and the full answer is too long for the comments. Shall I walk you through it here, step by step? Reply YES and I'll write it out.

Teachers and experts get these all day. The answer itself goes in your next message, once they reply, and the next person who asks can get the same treatment.

  • A personal story in the comments, sent by hand

Thank you for sharing that under the post. I read it a couple of times, and I'm really glad the video helped. How are things going now?

Write this one yourself, and only for comments that are personal. A private reply to every “love this” reads like a sales DM.

  • Giveaway winner, while the comment is recent

Congratulations, your comment on our giveaway post has been drawn as the winner! 🎉 Reply here by {time} to claim your prize. We contact winners only from this account and never ask for payment.

Possible only while the winning comment is under 7 days old, so in a long giveaway the early entries may be too old. Then announce the winner publicly and message them yourself.

  • A place on a class that's filling up

Hi! You asked about Saturday's class: there are a few spaces left. Would you like me to hold one for you while you book? Reply YES and I'll send the booking details.

Holding a place gives people a reason to answer today. Their YES opens 24 hours, enough to send the booking link and confirm.

  • A comment in Spanish

¡Hola! Gracias por tu comentario. ¿Quieres que te mande los detalles por aquí? Responde SÍ y te los envío.

It means “Hi! Thanks for your comment. Shall I send you the details here? Reply YES and I'll send them.” Answer in the commenter's language where you can, checked by a native speaker.

  • Public reply once the 7 days have passed

So sorry we missed this! Send us a DM with your question and we'll answer it there today.

After 7 days a comment can no longer get a private reply. Their DM starts a new conversation, and with it the usual 24 hours for replies through Meta's API.

Comment WHERE on a travel Reel, get the map by DM

Someone comments on your post

WHERE

Public reply under their comment

The spot's in your DMs 📍 Not following yet? Look in your message requests.

First DM (plain text)

Hi! You asked where this is, so here's an automatic DM. I've put every place from this Reel on one map, with a note on the best time to go. Shall I send it? Reply YES.Yes pleaseEvery spot from the Reel, on one mapOpen the map

Travel and food Reels fill up with “where is this?”, and WHERE matches it as a whole word in any capitals. The private reply can't carry the map link, so it ends on a question, and their YES opens 24 hours for the card. Run it on one Reel only: WHERE also turns up in “where's your jacket from?”

  1. Pick a post

Connect your Instagram account, then choose the post or Reel it runs on, or every post.

  2. Set the word: WHERE

Anyone who comments WHERE gets a reply under their comment and a DM. Capitals don't matter.

  3. Paste the message

Add the public reply and the first DM shown here. Once they answer, your link follows as a card.

Rules to know

  1. Each comment on your post, Reel, Story, Live or ad can get one private reply, sent within 7 days of the comment.
  2. Comments made during a Live can only get their private reply while the broadcast is still running.
  3. A private reply goes to the inbox of people who follow you and to the message requests of people who don't. Either way, it includes a link to the post they commented on.
  4. Nothing more can be sent until the person responds. Their response opens 24 hours for follow-up messages.
  5. Instagram allows at most 750 private replies to comments per hour per account. DMFast stays under 700 and queues the rest.
  6. Automated chats must say they're automated at the start of a conversation, after a long gap, and when a person hands the chat to automation.

Public reply, private reply or both

Everyone who scrolls past can read a comment, so most questions deserve at least a line in public. A private reply earns its place when the answer depends on the person, involves their details, or would turn the thread into a help desk.

“How much for a custom one?”“Just sent you a DM”The questions the price depends on
A complaintA short apology, so readers see it was handledThe day, the order and what went wrong
A phone number or emailNothing; delete the comment once you've messaged themHow they'd like to be contacted
PraiseA real thank-youOnly if they shared something personal

Writing the one message you get

  • Make it obviously about their comment. People who don't follow you find it in message requests, next to messages from strangers, so open with what they asked.
  • Skip “which post?”. Instagram attaches a link to the post they commented on, so you can go straight to the answer.
  • Ask one thing. A question they can answer in a word is easier than three in a row, and until they reply you can't add a fourth.
  • Stick to plain text. Meta's documentation describes the private reply as a text message, so links, photos and buttons wait for the next one.
  • Say it's automatic when it is, and sign the ones you write yourself with a first name.

Tip: Writing by hand? Quote a few of their words back, as in “you asked whether it comes in green”. It shows a person read the comment, which no automatic reply can fake.

Timing: the 7-day clock, Lives and busy posts

The 7 days start when the comment is made, not when you posted, so a Reel from last spring that picks up a question today can get a private reply any time this week. What runs out is the comment: one left eight days ago can only get a public answer or an ordinary DM.

Lives are stricter. A comment made during a broadcast can only be answered privately while you're still live, so the reply has to be automatic or sent by a teammate. If that's the plan, check that your tool answers Live comments before you go on air.

Busy posts meet a ceiling: Instagram allows 750 private replies to comments an hour per account. DMFast stays under 700 and sends the rest in turn, well inside the 7 days. On paid plans it can also go back over a post's comments from the past 7 days, so an auto-reply you set up on Thursday still answers Monday's commenters.

Mistakes that make private replies backfire

  • Messaging every commenter. Meta allows it, but someone who wrote “nice shot” and gets a sales pitch back will read it as spam.
  • Fixing a complaint only in private. People who read the complaint never see the fix unless you add a public line too.
  • Arguing in DMs with someone who is being rude in public. Delete, restrict or ignore instead of opening a private thread.
  • Writing a paragraph. In message requests, people judge a message by its first few words.
  • Saving it for a quieter day. After 7 days the private reply is gone for good.
  • Chasing a non-answer with another public comment. One nudge is plenty, and silence is an answer too.

To see whether your private replies work, watch how many people answer them. If few do, rewrite the opening line and the question, then test the new version from a second account that doesn't follow you, so you see what arrives in requests.

Questions people ask

What is a private reply on Instagram?

A direct message sent in answer to a comment. A professional account can send one for each comment on its posts, Reels, Stories, Lives and ads, within 7 days of the comment, and the message comes with a link to the post the person commented on.

Why did my private reply go to their message requests?

Because they don't follow your account. Instagram delivers private replies to the main inbox of followers and to the requests folder of everyone else. A public reply that says “check your requests” helps people find it.

Can I send more than one message after a comment?

Only once they respond. Until then, the private reply is the only message allowed. Their response opens 24 hours in which you can send more, such as the link card, buttons or product carousel that DMFast sends next.

Can a private reply include a link or a photo?

Plan on text only. Meta's documentation describes the private reply as a text message, and DMFast sends it as plain text, saving the link for a card that follows once they answer.

How do I reply privately to a comment that's two weeks old?

Not with a private reply: the 7 days have passed. You can answer under the comment, or message the person yourself from the Instagram app, where it arrives as a message request if they don't follow you.

Do private replies work on Facebook too?

Yes. A Facebook Page can send one private reply in Messenger to a comment on its posts, within 7 days of the comment. The templates here work there as well, though DMFast's follower check is Instagram-only.
