Send a free download to Facebook commenters

To deliver a lead magnet from a Facebook Page, ask people to comment one word on a post, answer each comment with a short Messenger message, and send the download once they reply. The Page gets one message per comment until the person answers, so that first message asks a question rather than carrying the file. Below are 12 messages for each step, plus fixes for the usual snags.

  • Post line that names the word

Want our free planting calendar for the year? Comment PDF below and our Page will send it to you in Messenger.

Say “in Messenger”. People don't always expect a Page to message them, and knowing where it will arrive means they'll look for it.

  • Public reply that says where to answer

Sent 📬 Reply to our message in Messenger, not here, and the calendar comes straight over.

Some people answer YES under your public reply instead of in Messenger, and a comment can't move the chat on. Saying where to reply prevents it.

  • First Messenger message

Hi! Thanks for asking for the planting calendar. This is an automatic message from our Page. It's a one-page PDF you can print and stick on the shed door. Shall I send it now? Reply YES.

Saying what it is, one printable page, gives people a reason to answer. Until they do, this is the only message the Page can send them.

  • First message that asks about them

Thanks for your comment! Our Page sends this message automatically. Quick question before the calendar comes over: are you growing in a garden, an allotment or pots on a balcony? Any reply works.

Any answer opens the chat. The answers also land in your inbox, in their own words, which is handy when you plan your next posts.

  • Email question

Where should we keep in touch? Reply with your email and the calendar arrives here straight after. We'll also send our monthly growing tips, and you can unsubscribe at any time.

Say what the address will get before they type it. If it's only used to send this one thing, say that instead.

  • The download, once they reply

Here's your free planting calendar: {link} It'll stay in this chat, so you can find it again in spring. Which month are you starting with?

Ending on a question invites another reply, and every reply from them gives you another 24 hours to answer.

  • Reminder at the email step

Just checking you saw this: the calendar is ready as soon as you send an email address here.

DMFast sends one reminder like this, after a delay you choose of up to 20 hours, if someone stops at the email question. Reminders are on the Pro plan and up.

  • Reply to “Can I just have it here?”

Of course, here it is: {link} If you'd ever like the monthly tips, just send us your email in this chat.

DMFast keeps asking for an address until it gets one, so step in by hand for people who'd rather not share it. If many ask, test a week without the email step.

  • Reply to “Is it really free?”

Yes, it's free, and there's no card or payment involved. We ask for an email so we can send our monthly tips, and you can unsubscribe whenever you like.

Plenty of “free” offers turn out not to be. Say plainly what you ask for in return, before they have to ask twice.

  • Public reply to a comment over 7 days old

Still available! Message our Page the word PDF and the calendar will come back to you straight away.

After 7 days a comment can't get a private reply, but a message from them starts a fresh conversation. Set PDF up as a DM keyword as well.

  • If the link won't open

Sorry it isn't opening! Are you on a phone or a computer, and what do you see when you tap it? Tell me and I'll get it working for you.

Files in cloud storage often fail because sharing is limited to you. Before the post goes up, open the link in a private browser window to see what strangers see.

  • Voucher instead of a download

Here's your voucher for {amount} off your first visit: {link} Show it at the till before {date}.

For a café, salon or shop, a first-visit voucher can work better than a PDF, because it turns a comment into a visit you can count.

Thanks for commenting PDF! This is an automatic message from our Page, and the free planting calendar is ready for you. Would you like it here? Reply YES, share your email, and the calendar comes straight back.Yes pleaseYour free planting calendar (PDF)Open the PDF

Naming the email step in the first message means the second question isn't a surprise. DMFast refuses replies that aren't an address and throwaway inboxes, saves each email as a lead for CSV export, and sends the card inside the 24 hours their YES opened.

  1. Pick a post

Connect your Facebook Page, then choose the Page post it runs on, or every post.

  2. Set the word: PDF

Anyone who comments PDF gets a reply under their comment and a DM. Capitals don't matter.

  3. Paste the message

Add the public reply and the first DM shown here. Once they answer, your link follows as a card.

Rules to know

  1. Each comment on your Page's posts can get one private message in Messenger, within 7 days of the comment, and nothing else can follow until the person replies.
  2. Their reply opens a 24-hour window for the email question, the download and anything after it. Each new message from them restarts the window.
  3. Meta's messaging tools for businesses work with Facebook Pages. A personal profile can't send automated replies, however many friends or followers it has.
  4. A Page can't message people because they liked or followed it, so a download can only go to people who commented or wrote to the Page first.
  5. A private reply can't be sent to another Facebook Page, so requests commented by business Pages need a public answer.

Lead magnets that suit a Facebook Page

Many Facebook Pages belong to local and service businesses, and for them the freebies that work best solve one practical problem for a nearby customer. The best ones fit on a phone screen and are useful the same day.

  • A garden centre's planting calendar for the year.
  • An estate agent's moving-house checklist.
  • A dentist's brushing chart for children.
  • An accountant's list of tax deadlines for sole traders.
  • A fitness studio's four-week plan for beginners.
  • A tutor's revision timetable for exam season.

Tip: Choose a comment word tied to the offer, such as PDF, PLAN or CHECKLIST. Words people type anyway, like YES or WOW, would send messages to people who were only being friendly.

From comment to download

  1. The post names the freebie and the word to comment, and says the file arrives in Messenger.
  2. Each matching comment gets a short public reply and one plain-text message in Messenger.
  3. They answer that message, with YES or anything else, which opens the 24-hour window.
  4. If you collect emails, the email question comes next, and the download waits for a real address.
  5. The download arrives as a card with a button, and every tap on it is tracked.

DMFast answers comments on your Page's own posts, on one post or on all of them. Comments in Facebook Groups and on personal profiles aren't covered, so if you mention the offer in a Group, link to the Page post and ask people to comment there.

The email step, and whether you need it

An email is the only way to reach someone after the 24 hours, so for most lead magnets it's the point of the exercise. The cost is a step where some people stop. Ask in one short line, say what they'll get, and keep the download as the reward for answering.

In DMFast, replies that don't contain an email address get a request to try again, throwaway inboxes are refused, and every address lands in your leads, ready to export as a CSV for your email tool. The Free plan collects up to 10 emails; paid plans have no limit.

In India, a free product in DMFast's store works as a lead magnet in its own right: people leave an email, and a phone number if you ask for one, then get the file through a private link. Use its page as the card's link.

When people say they didn't get it

  • They answered YES under your public reply instead of in Messenger, so the chat never moved on.
  • They commented with a GIF, a sticker or a different word, so nothing matched.
  • Their comment contained a web link and was skipped as spam.
  • They commented as a Page, which Meta doesn't allow private replies to.
  • The message is waiting in Messenger and they haven't opened it yet.
  • The comment is more than 7 days old, so it's past Meta's limit for a private reply.

Answer those comments publicly with the fix, or ask them to message the Page the word, which works at any time.

What to measure

Follow each step: comments, replies in Messenger, emails and taps on the card. If many people answer YES in the comments rather than in Messenger, reword the public reply. If replies are high but emails low, say more clearly what the address is for, or try a week without that step and compare the downloads.

Questions people ask

Can a Facebook Page send a PDF automatically?

It sends a link to the PDF: the card that follows their reply opens the file wherever you host it. Host it somewhere that opens without a login, such as a page on your own website.

Do people need to like or follow my Page to get it?

No, and DMFast can't check it on Facebook, because Meta doesn't tell apps who follows a Page. Anyone who comments the word gets the first message.

Can I send it to people who commented before I set this up?

If their comments are under 7 days old, yes. On the Pro plan and up, DMFast's “Reply to older comments” goes back over recent comments and sends the first message to anyone who used the word. For older comments, reply publicly and invite them to message the Page.

Does this work with a personal profile or a Group?

No. Automated messaging works with Pages, and DMFast answers comments on your Page's own posts. Post the offer on the Page and point Group members or friends on your profile to it.

Is this better than a Facebook lead ad?

They do different jobs. Lead ads are paid and collect details through a form inside Facebook. The comment flow costs nothing to run on your own posts and starts a Messenger conversation, but it only reaches people who see the post and comment.
