Ask for donations in Instagram DMs, without the guilt
A donation DM thanks someone for wanting to help, says what a gift pays for and sends one link to a secure donation page. Keep it calm: no guilt, and no deadlines that aren't real. The 12 templates below cover the first reply, trust questions, thank-yous and ways to help without giving money, plus the rules that decide when you can write.

Donation link, once they reply
Thank you! Here's our secure donation page: {link} Any amount helps, and your receipt will arrive by email as soon as you've given.
Saying where the receipt goes reassures people the page is genuine, and saves a “did it go through?” message later.
Where does the money go?
Good question, and one worth asking any charity. Of every {amount} donated, {amount} goes to {programme}, and the rest covers fundraising and running costs. Our full accounts are public here: {link}
Take the figures from your latest published accounts, not a rounded guess. Linking the accounts answers the next question before it's asked.
Is this a real charity?
We're glad you checked, because fake fundraisers do copy real ones. We're registered charity number {number}, and you can look us up on {register}. We only take donations through {link}, and we'll never ask you to send money by bank transfer in a DM.
Scammers copy charity names and photos. Saying where you never take money helps people spot an account pretending to be you.
Ways to help without giving money
There's no need to give money to make a difference. Sharing our post to your Story reaches people we can't, and we're always glad of volunteers on {day}. Would you like the volunteering details?
Plenty of people who comment can't afford to give. Offering something else they can do keeps them involved without making them feel bad.
Thank-you after a donation
Thank you so much, {name}. Your donation is going towards {specific thing} this month, and we'll share how it went on our Story once {milestone}.
Name what the money will do and when they'll hear more. Reply within 24 hours of their message, or type it yourself in the app if it's later.
Monthly giving
If a regular gift suits you better, {amount} a month helps us plan ahead for {thing}. You can set it up here and change or stop it whenever you like: {link}
Mention monthly giving to people who've already shown interest, not as the first ask. Only say “stop it whenever you like” if it really is that easy.
Receipts and tax questions
Yes, every donation through {link} gets a receipt by email with our registration details on it. If you need anything else for your tax return, reply here and we'll help.
People ask about Gift Aid in the UK and 80G receipts in India. Only say yes if your organisation is registered for the scheme, and leave tax advice to the donor's adviser.
Match-funding day
If you were planning to give, today's a good day: until {time}, every donation is doubled by {funder}, so {amount} becomes {amount}. Here's the link: {link}
Only when the match is real, with a real end time. A deadline that turns out to be invented costs more trust than it raises.
Donating items instead of money
That's really kind! Right now we most need {items}. You can drop them at {place} between {times}. Sadly we can't take {items}, as we've nowhere to store them.
List what you can't accept as well. It saves people a wasted trip and saves you a pile of things you can't use.
How close are you to the target?
Thanks for asking! We're at {amount} of our {amount} target, with {time} to go. The last part pays for {specific thing}, so everything from here goes straight to that.
Naming what the last stretch pays for gives the number meaning. Keep the figure in step with your fundraising page.
Someone wants to fundraise for you
Thank you for wanting to fundraise for us! Our pack has ideas, our logo and how to pay in what you raise: {link} Tell me the date and we'll cheer you on in our Stories.
Bake sales, sponsored runs and birthday fundraisers start with a message like theirs. Make sure the pack explains how they may use your name and logo.
When someone asks you for help
Thank you for reaching out, and I'm sorry things are hard right now. We support {who you help} in {area}, so we can't help directly, but {other organisation} may be able to: {link}
Every charity inbox gets messages like this. Never leave them to an auto-reply alone: make sure a person reads and answers each one.

Thank you 💛 We've sent you a DM. Not following us? Check your message requests.First DM (plain text)
Hi, thank you for wanting to help! This message is automatic. Every gift, however small, goes to food and vet care for the dogs in our kennels this winter. Shall I send you the donation link? Reply YES.Yes pleaseHelp the dogs in our care this winterDonateThe private reply can't hold a link, so it does the persuading in one sentence: what the money is for. A single YES opens 24 hours for the card. Point the button at your own donation page, and the tracked link shows how many people tapped through.

Rules to know
- Each DONATE comment can get one private reply within 7 days, text only, and the donation link can follow only after they answer.
- Comments made during a fundraising Live can only get their private reply while the Live is running, so ask for the keyword early in the broadcast.
- Automated messages can be sent until 24 hours after the supporter's latest message. Thank-yous and updates after that go by email, or by a person typing in the Instagram app.
- Automated replies must say they're automated. Supporters who think they're chatting with a volunteer may feel misled when they find out.
- Meta's tools can't send an appeal to all your followers. Appeals go in posts, Stories and Lives, and DMs answer the people who respond.

What a donation DM needs to say
- Thanks, first. They offered to help before you asked.
- What a gift pays for, in plain terms. “£10 feeds a dog for a week” says more than “support our work”, as long as the figure comes from your own costs.
- One link to a secure donation page you control. Not a personal payment app, and never bank details typed into a chat.
- What happens next: a receipt by email, and when they'll hear how the money was used.
- A way to help that isn't money, for everyone who can't give right now.
Tip: Read the first DM out loud before it goes live. If it sounds like a guilt trip, it will read like one too.
Instagram's fundraising tools or your own page?
Where Instagram's own tools are available to you, such as the donation sticker in Stories, people can give without leaving the app. They're only available in some countries, mostly for nonprofits approved for Meta's fundraising tools, and they've changed over the years: in October 2023, TechSoup reported that donations through them would be processed by PayPal Giving Fund and that Meta would stop covering processing fees.
A DM that links to your own donation page works in any country and for any organisation, and the donor's receipt and details stay in your own systems. The two can run side by side: the sticker on Stories, and a comment keyword on posts and Reels that sends people to your own page.
When an appeal goes viral
An emergency appeal can draw thousands of comments in an hour. Instagram allows an account at most 750 private replies to comments per hour; DMFast stays under 700 and queues the rest, and because a comment can be answered for 7 days, the queued replies still go out. Many of those commenters won't follow you, so their DM lands in message requests: say so in your public reply.
Spam arrives with the attention. DMFast skips comments that are links or promotional spam, and answers each person once a day per auto-reply, so someone who comments DONATE five times in an afternoon gets one DM, not five.
Mistakes that put supporters off
- Guilt in the first line. People who comment DONATE have already decided to help.
- Deadlines and match funding that aren't real.
- Asking people to follow you before they get the donation link. It puts a step between a willing donor and the button.
- Sending distressing photos in a DM nobody asked for.
- Linking to a personal payment app or a bank account, which looks exactly like a scam.
- Asking again the next day. One ask per conversation is plenty.
What to measure
Count DONATE comments, YES replies, taps on the donation card and gifts received. The tracked link shows the taps and your donation platform shows the gifts, so compare those two. If many tap and few give, look at the donation page: is it slow, does it ask for too much, or does the suggested amount start too high? If few say YES, the first DM needs a clearer reason to give.
Questions people ask
Can I DM all my followers to ask for donations?
No. Meta's messaging tools only let you reply to people who wrote to you, commented or replied to a Story, and there's no official way to message every follower. Put the appeal in a post, Reel or Story with a keyword, and answer the people who respond.
Can the first DM include the donation link?
Only if they messaged you first. When they commented, your private reply has to be plain text, so it explains what the money is for and asks if they'd like the link. Once they answer, the link card can follow straight away.
Can DMFast take donations?
No. DMFast sends people to your donation page, and the payment happens there. Its store, which works only in India through Razorpay, is for digital products, lead magnets and 1-on-1 bookings, not donations.
We're a small community group, not a charity. Do these templates still work?
Yes, with two changes: say plainly who is collecting the money and what it's for, and skip the registration and tax-receipt templates unless they apply to you. Automation needs an Instagram professional account (Business or Creator), which is free to switch to.
How do I stop people impersonating us in DMs?
Tell supporters, in posts and in your auto-reply, which page you take donations through and that you never ask for money by DM transfer. Report fake accounts to Instagram as impersonation, and ask your followers to report them too.
