What to send when someone replies to your Story

A reply to your Story lands in your DMs as a message from that person, so you can answer it straight away, link and all. Unlike a comment, it doesn't need a question-first DM, and automated answers have 24 hours to go out. The 13 replies below cover emoji reactions, shopping questions, votes and launch dates, plus the replies that need a person rather than a bot.

  • Reply to an emoji reaction

Ha, thank you! Glad that one made you smile. What would you like to see in my Stories next week?

Emoji reactions pile up after a popular Story and are easy to leave hanging. One question back turns a tap into a conversation; three questions turn it into homework.

  • “Where's this from?”

Good eye! It's from our new range, and this is the exact one from the Story: {link} It comes in two other colours too, if that shade isn't quite you.

Link the product page, not your shop's home page. Someone asking where it's from wants the one thing they saw, not a search.

  • The link, after a reply with the word

Here's the link from today's Story: {link} You're getting this automatic message because you replied LINK. Any questions about it? Send them here and I'll answer myself.

Name the word they sent, so the message still makes sense to someone who replied in passing and forgot. Saying it's automatic also covers Meta's rule for automated chats.

  • Thanks for a vote by reply

Vote counted, thank you! It's close so far. I'll post the result in my Stories on {time}.

Poll stickers keep votes on the Story, where no auto-reply can see them. Asking people to reply A or B brings every vote into your DMs, where each one can be answered.

  • Price question on a product Story

That one's ₹1,499, and delivery is free. Every size and colour is on this page: {link} Tell me your size and I'll check it's in stock.

Give the number in the first line. A reply that only says “check the link” feels like a dodge to someone who asked a simple question.

  • “When can I buy it?” on a sneak peek

Not long now: it goes on sale on {time}. Want a heads-up? Send me your email and I'll write to you the moment it's live.

If the launch is more than a day off, an automated DM can't reach them on the day, because their 24 hours will have run out. An email can, so ask for one.

  • Asking when you'll be live

I'm going live on {time}! Tap the countdown sticker on my Story and Instagram will remind you when it hits zero, so you don't have to keep checking.

An automated DM reminder days later isn't allowed once their 24 hours are up. The countdown sticker's reminder has no such limit and reaches everyone who tapped it.

  • “What's the song?”

It's right there in the Story: the song's title and artist run along the top, just under my username.

That only works for music added from Instagram's own library. If the track came from somewhere else, name it yourself in the reply.

  • The offer has already ended

    Thanks for replying! That code expired at midnight, I'm afraid. Here's what's on this week instead: {link}

A Story stays up for 24 hours, so an offer that ends at midnight can still be on screen the next morning. Delete or replace the Story when the offer closes.

  • When someone shares something personal

Thank you for trusting me with this. I've read every word, and I want to answer it properly rather than in a rush, so I'll write back tonight.

Answer these yourself. A cheerful automatic reply with a shop link, sent to someone who has just opened up, is the worst thing a catch-all can do.

  • Reply to criticism

Thanks for telling me directly instead of scrolling past. I can see why it came across that way. What would have made it more useful for you?

Reply privately and calmly, and don't reshare their message to make a point. Someone who takes the trouble to write usually wants to be heard more than to win.

  • Automatic hand-off to a person

Good question, and one I'd rather answer myself than leave to an automatic reply. I'll get back to you here by {time}.

A good catch-all for Stories that draw questions you can't predict: it admits it's automatic and promises a time. Keep the promise, or change the time.

  • A brand pitch in your Story replies

Thanks for getting in touch! I keep all brand conversations in one place so nothing slips through: could you send the details by email? The address is on my profile.

Story replies are quick and casual, and deals need a paper trail. Email keeps the terms, dates and fees where you can find them later.

Replied to your story

LINKYou asked for the link, so it's on its way. This reply is automatic. If anything in today's Story left you with a question, send it here and I'll answer it myself. The link from today's StoryOpen the link

A Story reply is a message, so the 24-hour window is already open: no YES step, and the card follows this text straight away. DMFast matches whole words in any case, so “link pls” counts and “linked” doesn't. A bare emoji holds no word, so it goes to your catch-all, if you have one.

  1. Pick Story replies

Connect your Instagram account and add an auto-reply for people who answer your Stories.

  2. Set the word: LINK

Story replies with the word LINK in them get this message.

  3. Paste the message

Add the message shown here and the link card that goes with it.

Rules to know

  1. A reply to your Story reaches your DMs as a message from that person. Through Meta's API, which every automation tool uses, you then have 24 hours from their latest message to answer.
  2. Because they wrote first, your answer can include links and buttons from the start. The plain-text-first rule applies only to private replies to comments.
  3. If someone who doesn't follow you replies and you haven't chatted before, the conversation starts in your Requests folder rather than the main inbox. You can still answer it.
  4. After the 24 hours, Meta's human agent tag lets a real person reply through the API for up to 7 days, for support only, never for promotions.
  5. Automatic replies must make clear that they're automated, under Meta's policy for automated chats.
  6. Views and Story likes aren't messages, so no official tool can DM the people who only watched or liked a Story.

What reaches your DMs from a Story, and what doesn't

Only some Story interactions turn into messages. The rest stay on the Story itself, where you can read them, but no DM and no auto-reply follows.

What they doReaches your DMs?Can an auto-reply answer?
Type a reply in the message barYes, as a message tied to that StoryYes, with a keyword or a catch-all
Tap a quick emoji reactionYes, as a reply with just the emojiOnly a catch-all, since an emoji has no keyword
Tap the heart to like itNo, it shows in your viewer listNo
Vote in a poll, quiz or sliderNo, the results stay on the StoryNo
Answer a question stickerNo, answers collect on the StoryNo; ask for a reply with a word instead
Mention you in their own StoryYes, as a mentionYes, through a Story auto-reply with no word

Tip: Want answers you can follow up? Swap the poll for a line of text such as “Reply A or B”. Each vote then arrives as a message, and you have 24 hours to keep that chat going.

Asking for replies on the Story itself

A Story that asks for a reply works like a comment keyword post without the 7-day limit or the YES step. Put the word on the Story in large text and say what it gets them: “Reply LINK and I'll DM you the recipe.” Repeat it on the last frame, since not everyone taps through to the end.

A link sticker is quicker when all you want is a click: one tap and they're on the page. A reply word is better when the conversation matters, because every reply is a chat you can answer and follow up within the 24 hours. In DMFast it can also ask for an email, or check that they follow you, before the link goes out.

Pick a word nobody sends by accident. LINK, RECIPE or LIST are clear; YES, OMG and SAME turn up in ordinary replies and would set the auto-reply off for people who were only being friendly.

One catch-all or a few keywords

In DMFast, a Story auto-reply with no word answers every reply and reaction to your Stories, once a day per person, and the same auto-reply answers people who mention you in theirs. Keyword auto-replies are checked first, so a reply with LINK in it gets the link and everything else falls through to the catch-all.

That makes the catch-all the riskiest message you'll write. The same words go to a 🔥, to “where's this from?” and to someone telling you about a hard week. Keep it short, warm and general, say it's automatic and promise a reply from a person. If your Stories draw personal replies, leave the catch-all off and use keywords only.

Two more things to know. Story auto-replies and DM keyword replies don't overlap: a reply to your Story only triggers Story auto-replies, and a plain DM only triggers DM ones, so a word you promote in both places needs setting up twice. And on the Growth and Business plans, replies that match no auto-reply can get an AI answer, written only from the business info you've given DMFast, at one credit per reply.

Mistakes that waste a good Story

  • Asking for a word on the Story and forgetting to switch the auto-reply on. Reply from a second account in the first minute and check what arrives.
  • Using a question sticker and waiting for DMs that never come.
  • Leaving an offer Story up after the offer has ended, so late replies get a dead code.
  • Promising to message people on launch day when the launch is a week away.
  • Letting a cheerful catch-all answer replies that needed a person.
  • Limiting Story replies to people you follow, then asking everyone to reply. Check who can reply in Instagram's settings before a big Story.

What to measure

Compare replies with views for every Story that asks for a word. If 2,000 people watch and 15 reply, the ask is too vague, too small on screen or too far into the sequence. Then put a tracked link on the card, so you can see how many of the people who replied went on to tap it.

Also watch the gap between an automatic hand-off and your real answer. If the message says tonight, answer tonight, or change the message.

Questions people ask

Can I send a link when someone replies to my Story?

Yes. Their reply is a message, so you have 24 hours to answer, and the answer can carry a link or a button from the start. That's the big difference from comments, where the first private reply has to be plain text and the link waits for their answer.

Can I automatically DM people who view or like my Story?

No. Views and Story likes don't create a message, and Meta's API only lets an account answer people who wrote to it, commented or mentioned it. Ask viewers to reply with a word instead; each reply can then get an automatic answer.

Why didn't my Story auto-reply answer someone?

Usually because their reply didn't contain the word (an emoji alone never does), a catch-all had already answered them that day, or their message held a link and was skipped as likely spam. Also check that the auto-reply is switched on and set to Story replies rather than DMs. On the Free plan, auto-replies also pause once 100 people have been answered that month.

How long do I have to answer a Story reply?

Anything automated, and anything sent through Meta's API, must go within 24 hours of their last message, and each new message from them restarts the clock. Replies you type yourself in the Instagram app aren't bound by that limit, though a fast answer lands better while the Story is still up.

Does this work with Facebook Stories?

Not in DMFast. Story replies and mentions are Instagram-only there. On a Facebook Page, conversations start from comments on your posts or from messages to the Page.
