Tips before you post
Shoot food by a window in daylight, from straight above for flat dishes such as a spread, or from a low angle for tall ones such as burgers or stacks of pancakes. Overhead flash makes food look greasy.
Clean the rim of the plate and wipe away drips before you take the picture. Steam, a torn bread edge and a spoon already in the dish read as real, but sauce on the rim looks like a mistake.
Add a person: a hand reaching in, a fork lifting a bite, someone's elbow at the edge. It turns a plate into a meal, and posts with a person tend to feel less like a menu.
Name the dish and where it came from. Followers want to know whether it is a recipe they can cook or a place they can visit.
Take the photo quickly. Hot food collapses, ice melts and sauces set within minutes, and a plate that looked great at the table can look flat after ten minutes of retakes.
Questions people ask
What is a good short caption for a food photo?
Pick one detail: the sauce, the crisp edge, the steam, or how fast it vanished. “Eaten in under four minutes. Photographed for six” says more than the word delicious, and it is easier to remember.
Should I write a recipe in the caption?
Only a very short one. Long recipes get cut off in the feed and are hard to read on a phone. Put the details in a link or send them to people who ask, and keep the caption for the hook.
How do I caption food photos without repeating the same joke?
Write about the meal, not the category. Mention who cooked, what went wrong, or what you almost ordered. Detail makes each post different, even when you photograph dinner every night.
What caption works for a restaurant visit?
Say what you ordered and one thing you would do again. A short line such as “Came for the starter, stayed for the bread basket” is useful to anyone deciding where to eat.
