Dog captions from both ends of the lead
Paste one of these dog captions under your next photo of the dog. They're sorted by what the dog is up to, from walks and zoomies to baths, vet trips and hogging the sofa, with sets for rescue dogs, gotcha days and grey-muzzled seniors, and a group written in the dog's own voice for pet accounts.

Tips before you post
Crouch to the dog's eye level. From standing height you're shooting the top of its head, which makes even a big dog look small and far away.
Dogs rarely hold still, so use burst mode and pick the sharpest frame afterwards. For running shots, go outside in daylight: in dim light the phone uses a slower shutter and a moving dog blurs.
Black and dark brown coats lose their detail in harsh sun and on dark sofas. Shoot in open shade or by a window, and tap the dog's face on the screen so the phone sets focus and brightness there.
Check the collar tag before posting. Many tags carry a phone number or an address, so turn it away from the camera or blur it.
Skip the photo if the dog looks uneasy. Pinned-back ears, lip licking, yawning and showing the whites of the eyes are common signs of stress, and a relaxed dog makes a better picture anyway.
Questions people ask
What's a good caption for a dog photo?
Start with the dog's name and one habit only your dog has: the lamppost it always stops at, the sock it carries to the door, the way it sleeps upside down. Specific behaviour makes strangers smile and makes people who know the dog nod.
Should I write captions in my dog's voice?
Plenty of pet accounts do, and it works best when the voice stays consistent: always dramatic, always hungry, always offended by the postman. On a personal account, a dog-voice line now and then reads as a joke, so mixing the two is fine.
Should my dog have its own Instagram account?
If most of what you post is the dog, a separate account keeps your own profile for you and gives dog lovers one place to follow. Instagram lets you add more than one account and switch between them in the app without logging out.
What is a gotcha day?
It's the anniversary of the day you adopted a pet. Many rescue dogs arrive with no known birthday, so owners celebrate gotcha day instead, often with a favourite walk, a special treat or a photo in the same spot as the first one.
How do I get my dog to look at the camera?
Hold a treat or toy right above the lens, or make a sound the dog hasn't heard before, like a squeak or a click, and shoot the moment its head tilts. Keep sessions short and reward every look, or the dog learns that the phone means boring.
