Tips before you post
Shoot on the calmest part of the day, usually early morning or just after sunset. Still water gives you a clean reflection, and a breeze breaks it into noise that no edit fixes.
Get low, near the waterline, so the reflection fills the lower half of the frame. From standing height the shore and the sky look further apart than they feel.
Name the lake or the nearest town in the caption or the location tag. Lakes are searched by name, and local walkers often reply with a better access point or a cafe nearby.
Keep your phone in a dry bag or a zipped pocket if you are on a boat or a jetty. Most lake photos that fail do so because of a damp lens, so wipe it before the last shot.
Add a figure for scale: a swimmer, a kayak, a small tent. Without one, a mountain lake and a village pond can look the same.
Questions people ask
What is a good short caption for a lake photo?
Keep it to the water and the moment: “Glass water, no wind, nobody talking” or “Jetty at seven a.m.” A short line suits a still reflection, because the picture already carries most of the feeling.
Should I name the lake in my caption?
If it is a known spot, yes, or add it as the location tag. People plan trips from posts like yours, and naming it helps them find the place. If the spot is small or fragile, you can leave the name out.
What should I caption a swimming or kayaking photo?
Write about the one thing that happened: the cold, the wobble, the first jump in. A short, honest line about the water temperature or your balance usually gets more replies than a general line about adventure.
Do lake captions need hashtags?
No. The captions on this page work without them. A clear line about what the picture shows is enough, and you can add a location tag if the place matters.
