Tips before you post

  1. Photograph the print, not just the picture. A shot of the photo on a table, with a thumb or a worn corner in view, looks like an artefact and makes the caption feel real.

  2. Put the year or your age in the caption. “Age six” or “summer 2009” tells followers how far back it goes, and they will comment with their own matching memory.

  3. Tag the people in it only if they would enjoy being tagged. A teenage photo can be great to one person and mortifying to another, so ask the ones who look worst first.

  4. Scan or photograph old prints in daylight by a window, flat on a table, without flash. Flash makes glossy prints glare and hides the grain that makes them charming.

  5. Pair an old photo with a new one of the same place or people in a carousel. The second slide is where most of the replies come from.

  6. Check who is in the picture before you post a family album. Relatives who never joined Instagram, or children, are worth asking about first.

What they get

DMFast answers each comment and sends the DM for you. The first message asks them to reply, then the link follows, because Instagram allows no links in that first message.

Questions people ask

What is a good caption for a throwback photo?

Say what is in the picture and how old it is. “Age six, holding a bucket like it was a trophy.” works better than a general line about the past, because followers can see and feel the exact moment.

Do I need to say Throwback Thursday?

No. People post old photos on any day. The phrase is a habit from older social media, and Instagram does not give old photos extra reach on a Thursday. A line about the photo is more useful.

How do I post an old printed photo on Instagram?

Photograph the print in daylight by a window, flat on a table, straight on, without flash. Or use a scanner app. Crop to the picture, and keep the paper edge if you like the aged feel.

Should I tag people in my throwback post?

Tag the ones who would like it. A funny photo from ten years ago can be a joy for one friend and an embarrassment for another. A quick message first keeps the friendship and gets you a better reaction.
