Beach captions for sand, swims and sunburns

Paste any of these 83 beach captions under a photo from the shore, whether it was a lazy towel day, a surf lesson, a family trip with buckets and spades or a windy walk in October. They're grouped by the kind of day you had, and each one is built on something you only get at the beach: tides, sunscreen, gulls, rock pools and sand in everything.

Tips before you post

  1. Midday sun makes everyone squint and flattens the color of the water. The first hour after sunrise and the hour before sunset give softer light and long shadows across the sand.

  2. Keep your phone in a zip-top bag or pouch between shots and clean the lens with a soft cloth rather than your shirt. Sand scratches, and salt spray leaves a film that makes photos look hazy.

  3. Turn on the grid in your camera settings and keep the horizon level. A tilted sea line is the first thing people notice in a beach photo.

  4. Shooting toward the sun turns people into silhouettes. Use that on purpose, turn so the sun is behind you, or tap a face on the screen so the phone exposes for it.

  5. Beaches are full of other people's children in swimwear. Check the background before posting, and crop or choose another shot if strangers' kids are clearly visible.

  6. A waterproof pouch lets you take the phone into the shallows for a shot at water level. Test it with a folded tissue inside first, and keep the strap around your wrist.

What they get

My map of the quieter coves along this stretch of coast, with parking notes and the tide times when there's actually sand to sit on.

DMFast answers each comment and sends the DM for you. The first message asks them to reply, then the link follows, because Instagram allows no links in that first message.

Questions people ask

What's a good short caption for a beach photo?

Pick one detail from the day and keep it under ten words: the tide, the cold water, the sand in your bag, the sunburn. A short line leaves the photo room to do the talking, and the first group above is a good place to start.

What should I caption a beach photo of my kids?

One small moment works better than a summary: the moat the tide filled, the first run at the waves, the crab that got a name. If they're old enough to care, let them pick the photo before it goes up.

Can I use these captions for a lake or pool photo?

Some of the lazy-day lines work anywhere there's a towel, but anything about tides, waves, salt or shells will give it away. Lakes and pools have their own caption pages, with lines that fit fresh water and pool decks.

Should I add the location to a beach post?

It helps friends find the place and helps anyone planning a trip. For a small, quiet beach, or while you're still there, you might add the location later or name the town rather than the exact spot.

What can I caption a beach photo in winter?

Lean into the weather: the wind, the gray sky, the flask of tea, the brave dip. Captions about heat and sunscreen won't fit an off-season beach, so the cold-water group above was written for exactly those days.
