Slang meaning

What does DM mean?

DM stands for “direct message”: a private message to one person or a small group, instead of a public comment. On Instagram, “DM me” means send the account a message. On Facebook the same thing happens in Messenger, where many people still call it a PM.

What DM can mean

1. A private message

The main meaning. A DM is any message only the people in the chat can see, unlike a comment, post or Story that followers can see. It works as a noun (“I sent you a DM”), a verb (“DM me”) and in the past tense (“I DM'd you,” also spelled DMed). Instagram's messaging is called Instagram Direct, and Facebook's runs through Messenger.

2. Dungeon Master

In tabletop role-playing games such as Dungeons & Dragons, the DM is the Dungeon Master: the player who runs the game, describes the world and voices everyone the other players meet. On a gaming account, “our DM” or “the DM screen” has nothing to do with your inbox.

3. Boots, money and medicine

In Britain, DMs are also Dr. Martens boots. Older Germans and coin collectors know DM as the Deutsche Mark, Germany's currency before the euro. On a medical form, DM is diabetes mellitus. Each lives in its own context, so they rarely get mixed up with messages.

How people use it on Instagram and Facebook

  • The Instagram inbox

Messages from people you don't follow arrive as requests, which you can accept or delete. A first message to someone who doesn't follow you can only be text; photos, videos and voice notes wait until they accept. Teen Accounts are stricter: teens can only be messaged by people they follow or are already connected to.

  • Bios and captions

“DM for collabs,” “DM to order” and “DMs open” all invite people to message. A post that says “comment GUIDE and I'll DM you” usually runs on an auto-reply tool: you comment the word, get a reply under your comment and a private message, and the link tends to arrive once you answer that message.

  • Facebook and Messenger

On Facebook, messages go through Messenger, and messages to a business land in its Page inbox. Groups and Marketplace still use the older “PM me” and “PMed you.” On Marketplace, the first message is often the ready-made “Is this still available?”

  • Public comment threads

“Check your DMs” under a post moves a conversation out of sight: a shop sending prices, a friend with gossip. A stranger commenting “DM me” on your post with nothing else is often spam, or a fake collaboration offer.

How to reply to DM

Where it comes from

Twitter, now X, called its private messages direct messages from its early years, and the short form DM caught on there. Instagram added its own private messaging, Instagram Direct, in December 2013, and “DM me” soon became standard in captions and bios.

Questions people ask

What is the difference between a DM and a PM?

None in meaning: both are private messages. PM, “private message,” is the older term from web forums and is still common in Facebook groups. DM is the usual word on Instagram, X and TikTok. Use whichever the other person uses.

Why can't I find a DM someone says they sent?

Check your requests. On Instagram, messages from accounts you don't follow wait there instead of in your main inbox. If Hidden Words is on, requests containing offensive words, or words you've chosen to hide, go to a separate hidden requests folder.

What does “slide into the DMs” mean?

To message someone privately, usually with romantic interest, after seeing their posts. Whether it's welcome depends on the message. A short first line about something specific they posted goes over far better than a bare “hey” or a paragraph.

Can a business DM all its followers at once?

No. There's no official way to message every follower. Through Meta's tools, a business can answer people who messaged it, replied to a Story or commented. Automated messages also have time limits: within 24 hours of the person's last message, or within 7 days of a comment for the single private reply to it.
