Slang meaning
What does IMO mean?
IMO stands for “in my opinion.” It labels a statement as a personal view rather than a fact, which makes it a gentle way to recommend something or to disagree: “imo the second season is better.”
Updated 6 October 2026
A way of saying “in my opinion”: it marks what you say as your own view rather than a fact, softening advice and disagreement.
What IMO can mean
1. This is just my view
The standard meaning. IMO turns a claim into an opinion: “the window seat is better imo.” Because you've already admitted it's a matter of taste, people can disagree without it turning into a fight. It can go at the start, at the end or in brackets, and lowercase is the usual way to type it.
2. The imo app
imo is also a free app for messages, voice calls and video calls. When someone asks “are you on imo?” or says “call me on imo,” they mean the app, not an opinion. The tell is a request to call, or a complaint about a dropped connection.
3. Olympiads and ships
In schools, IMO usually means a maths olympiad, from the International Mathematical Olympiad for top secondary students to school contests with similar names. In shipping, it's the International Maritime Organization, the UN agency that sets global shipping standards. A post about medals or vessels means one of these.
How people use it on Instagram and Facebook
Comment debates
Under posts that invite opinions, such as rankings, recipes or football line-ups, imo keeps disagreement civil: “right top three imo, wrong order.” Without it, the same comment can read as a correction rather than a view, and threads heat up faster.
Recommendations in DMs
Friends use it when suggesting something: “get the smaller size imo,” “skip the sequel imo.” It signals advice, not instruction, so the other person can ignore it without anyone feeling slighted.
Captions and poll stickers
Creators pair imo with a hot take, in a caption or next to a poll sticker on a Story, to invite replies: “cereal is a soup imo.” It works as a prompt as much as an opinion, and the replies are where the real debate happens.
Local Facebook groups
In neighbourhood and hobby groups, IMO usually follows a recommendation: a plumber, a vet, a walking route. It means “this worked for me,” which is worth weighing alongside the other replies before you book anyone.

How to reply to IMO
Where it comes from
IMHO, the longer form, was common on Usenet newsgroups before the web. The Jargon File, a long-running glossary of hacker slang, traces it to science-fiction fandom and lists jokey variants such as IMNSHO, “in my not-so-humble opinion.” IMO is the plain version of the same habit, and it moved from forums to texting and social media.
Questions people ask
What's the difference between IMO and IMHO?
IMHO adds “humble” (some read it as “honest”): “in my humble opinion.” It began as a show of modesty, but it's often used with a wink, right before a confident take. IMNSHO, “in my not-so-humble opinion,” drops the pretence entirely.
Is IMO fine in work messages?
Generally, yes. It's common in workplace chat and shows you're open to other views. In a formal letter, a report or a reply to a complaint, write “in my view” or “I think” instead, which says the same thing in full.
What is the imo app?
A free app for chats, voice calls and video calls, similar in idea to WhatsApp. If a relative asks whether you're “on imo,” they want to reach you through it. It has nothing to do with the opinion meaning, apart from the spelling.
What is an IMO number?
A seven-digit number that identifies a ship, from the International Maritime Organization's numbering scheme. It stays with the ship for life, even when the name, flag or owner changes, which is why ship-tracking pages and port posts quote it.
