Slang meaning
What does PFP mean?
PFP is short for “profile picture,” the small round photo beside your name on Instagram, Facebook and most other apps. People use it in comments like “new pfp?” and “this is pfp material,” and couples and best friends set matching pfps to show they come as a pair.

Short for “profile picture”: the photo or image shown next to your name on an account.
What PFP can mean
1. Your profile picture
The plain meaning. Your pfp is the image people see on your profile, beside every comment you leave and at the top of every DM thread. Instagram and Facebook show it as a circle, so a face or logo in the middle survives the crop best. Because it travels everywhere you post, it does a lot of the work of a first impression.
2. “Pfp material”: a compliment
Saying a photo is “pfp material,” or commenting “new pfp” under it, means it's good enough to be someone's profile picture: flattering, well lit and very them. Friends drop it under selfies and holiday shots. It's a friendly way to pick out the best photo in a carousel.
3. PFP collections in crypto
In crypto circles, a PFP project is a collection of thousands of similar illustrated characters, each sold as an NFT and meant to be used as its owner's profile picture. The craze peaked in 2021 and 2022. If “pfp” sits next to words like mint, floor price or collection, this is the meaning.
How people use it on Instagram and Facebook
Comments on selfies
“Pfp?” or “new pfp incoming” under a selfie predicts it will become the poster's profile picture. Friends keep an eye out, and when the swap happens, someone usually comments on it.
Facebook profile updates
On Facebook, a new profile picture usually appears as a post that friends can like and comment on, so a change can attract the kind of attention a birthday gets, especially from relatives. Instagram makes far less fuss: the picture just changes.
Matching pfps
Couples, best friends and siblings set matching pfps: two halves of one image, the same pose in two photos, or paired characters from a show. Side by side, the pictures complete each other. When one person changes theirs, followers sometimes read it as news, which isn't always fair.
Spotting fake accounts
A default pfp, the grey silhouette a new account starts with, is a common sign of a throwaway or spam account, especially alongside no posts and a cold DM. It isn't proof, since plenty of private people never upload one, but it's a fair reason to be careful with links.

Questions people ask
What's the difference between pfp, DP and avi?
They all mean the picture on your profile. DP, for “display picture,” is the usual word in India, Pakistan and Nigeria, carried over from older messaging apps that used that label. Avi, short for avatar, was common on Twitter, and fan accounts often say icon. Pfp is the everyday term on Instagram and TikTok.
Does changing my pfp notify my followers?
Instagram doesn't send a notification, but anyone who sees your comments, Stories or DMs will spot the new picture. Facebook usually shares a new profile picture as a post on your profile and in friends' feeds, though you can choose not to share it when you upload.
Why does my pfp look blurry?
Usually the original image was small, heavily zoomed or a screenshot of a screenshot. Start from the original photo, crop it square yourself with the face in the middle so the circle doesn't cut it off, and upload it from your camera roll rather than from a messaging app, which often compresses images.
What makes a good pfp for a business?
A logo or a clear photo of the owner, whichever customers recognise faster. It has to read at thumbnail size, since that's how it appears beside every reply and DM, so skip small text and busy backgrounds. Change it rarely: regulars find you by recognising it.
