What does HMU mean?

HMU is short for “hit me up,” meaning “get in touch with me.” It invites a message, a call or an offer: “hmu if you want the last ticket.” In fashion, beauty and wedding credits, the same three letters stand for hair and makeup.

What HMU can mean

1. Get in touch with me

The everyday meaning. HMU asks someone to contact you, usually about something specific: “hmu when you land,” “hmu if you're going to the match.” It doesn't say how, so the answer could be a DM, a text or a call. Sent to one person it's a nudge to stay in touch; posted publicly it's an open door.

2. An open offer or a sales line

In a Story or a listing, HMU works as a small public notice: “two spare festival passes, hmu,” “taking cake orders for December, hmu.” Anyone who sees it is welcome to reply. In buy-and-sell posts it simply means “message me if you want this.”

3. Hair and makeup

In fashion, beauty and wedding work, HMU means hair and makeup. Shoot credits list it beside the photographer and the stylist, and an “HMU artist” does both jobs on a set or on a wedding morning. When HMU sits in a list of credits under a photo, nobody is asking to be contacted.

How people use it on Instagram and Facebook

  • Instagram bios

Creators and small sellers use it as a contact line: “hmu for collabs,” “commissions open, hmu.” It's friendly but vague, so many add where to write, such as “DM me” or an email address, to save people guessing.

  • Stories and Notes

A Story or Note saying “bored, hmu” or “who's around tonight? hmu” is a call for company. Friends answer with a reply or a voice note, and plans start from there. It sounds relaxed rather than needy, which is part of its appeal.

  • Facebook Marketplace and groups

Sellers end listings with “hmu if interested,” and local buy-and-sell groups are full of it. Replying through the listing's own Message button keeps the chat linked to the item, which helps when several people are asking about the same thing.

  • Flirting in DMs

From a crush, “hmu sometime” is a low-pressure way to say “I'd like to hear from you.” It hands the next move to you, which some people read as interest and others as a hedge. A specific plan says more than an open hmu.

How to reply to HMU

Questions people ask

How is HMU different from LMK?

HMU (“hit me up”) asks someone to start a conversation with you. LMK (“let me know”) asks for an answer about one thing: “lmk if you can make it.” HMU is open-ended, while LMK expects a reply to a specific question.

What does “hmu on snap” or “hmu on ig” mean?

It names the app. “Hmu on snap” means message me on Snapchat, and “hmu on ig” means send an Instagram DM. People add it when they'd rather not share a phone number, or because that's the app they actually check.

Is HMU flirty?

It can be. Between friends it's logistics. From someone you've been chatting with, a late-night “hmu 😉” is an invitation to keep talking, and the emoji is doing the flirting. You don't owe anyone a reply, and a plain “maybe later” is a fine answer.

Why does HMU show up in wedding and photo-shoot credits?

There it means hair and makeup. Fashion and bridal posts credit each person's job, so “HMU” sits next to the photographer and the stylist, and artists who do both describe themselves as HMU artists in their bios.

Is “hmu” a good call to action for a shop?

It sounds friendly, but it leaves people to work out how and where to reach you. “Message us for prices” or “DM us the word SIZE” gives one clear next step, which is easier to act on than an open hmu.
