Slang meaning
What does finsta mean?
A finsta is a second Instagram account, usually private, where someone posts to a small group of close friends. The name comes from “fake Instagram”.
Updated 6 October 2026
A finsta is a secondary, usually private Instagram account for unpolished posts shared with a few close friends.
What finsta can mean
1. A second, private account
The main meaning. A person keeps a polished main account and a finsta for jokes, messy photos and rants. Followers are a handful of trusted friends, so the posts are looser than on the main profile.
2. Rinsta, the main account
The finsta’s counterpart is “rinsta”, short for “real Instagram”: the public account with the best photos. People joke that the “fake” one is the more real of the two.
3. Fixing to, in some dialects
Wiktionary lists a separate “finsta” in African-American and Southern US English, meaning “fixing to” (about to). It is unrelated to Instagram and appears in speech more than in captions.
How people use it on Instagram and Facebook
Instagram Stories and posts
A finsta account usually has a joke username and a private setting, and its posts are meant for a handful of people. Content tends to be unfiltered and funny.
Comments and DMs
“Add my finsta” or “follow my finsta” means the person is offering you a place in the inner circle. It is a sign of trust, not a request to approve a stranger.
Close Friends and Notes
Many people now use the Close Friends list on one account instead, which does the same job without a second login. Finsta still describes the style of post.

How to reply to finsta
Where it comes from
“Finsta” is a clipping of “finstagram”, from “fake” and “Instagram”. Wiktionary’s earliest quotation is from 2017, in a book about teenagers and social media, though the word may be older in speech.
Questions people ask
Is a finsta against Instagram’s rules?
Having more than one account is allowed, and Instagram lets you switch between accounts in one app. Fake accounts that pretend to be someone else, or are used for harassment or spam, are not allowed.
What is a rinsta?
Rinsta is the “real Instagram”, a person’s main public account. People use it jokingly as the opposite of finsta, even though it is the more polished and less honest one.
Can a business account have a finsta?
Not really. The finsta idea is a private, personal account. A business can run a second profile for a niche or a behind-the-scenes feed, but should not hide who is behind it.
Are finsta posts really private?
Only as private as the followers. Anyone who follows can screenshot or tell others, and a private account is still seen by everyone you approve. Treat it as a smaller audience, not a secret.
