What does OOTD mean?

An OOTD is an “outfit of the day” post: a photo or video showing what someone is wearing, usually a full-length mirror shot or a quick turn on camera. #ootd has long been one of the standard tags on fashion posts.

Updated 6 October 2026

A post showing what someone is wearing today; OOTD is short for “outfit of the day,” and the caption often says where it's from.

Stands for: Outfit of the dayTone: upbeat and showy; everyday fashion talk

What OOTD can mean

1. Today's outfit, shown off

The plain use. Someone dresses for work, a wedding or nothing special, takes a mirror selfie or asks a friend for a full-length shot, and captions it “ootd.” It doesn't have to be fancy. Plenty of OOTD posts are jeans and a jumper, because the point is the look, not the occasion.

2. Asking where the outfit is from

Under someone else's post, “ootd details?” or “ootd links pls” asks where each piece came from. Creators answer by tagging brands on the photo, listing items in the caption or replying in DMs. A comment that's just “ootd 😍” is a compliment, not a question.

3. A shop's styled look

Boutiques and clothing shops post OOTD-style looks to show how their pieces go together: a staff member or model in a full outfit, each item named with its price. Here the label is a sales format, and the “day” is often just the day the stock arrived.

How people use it on Instagram and Facebook

  • Feed posts and carousels

A typical OOTD carousel opens with the full look, then close-ups of the shoes, bag or jewellery. Tagging brands on the photo or listing items in the caption answers the “where's it from?” question before anyone asks.

  • Reels and Stories

Video versions show a quick change or a slow turn, often set to a trending sound. In Stories, OOTD is a daily snapshot that disappears after 24 hours, and a poll sticker (“this or that?”) turns it into a vote on tomorrow's outfit.

  • Hashtags and captions

Because #ootd sits on an enormous number of posts, it says little about yours on its own. Words that describe the look, such as the city, the style or the occasion, tell people and Instagram's search more about what the post shows.

  • Comment sections

“ootd goals” and a row of 🔥 are standard praise. The most common follow-up is about fit, so creators who mention their height and the size they're wearing save themselves a lot of repeat questions.

Questions people ask

What does OOTN mean?

“Outfit of the night,” for a going-out look: dinner, a party, a concert. OOTD covers whatever someone wore in the day. Both work the same way, and plenty of people just use OOTD for everything.

What's a fit check?

The same idea under a newer name: showing your outfit, usually in a head-to-toe video. “Fit” is short for outfit. Fit check is a popular label on Reels and TikTok, while OOTD is the older tag that started with photos.

How is GRWM different from OOTD?

GRWM, “get ready with me,” shows the process: hair, makeup and choosing clothes, often while chatting to the camera. OOTD shows the finished result. Many creators post both, with the GRWM ending where the OOTD photo begins.

How do I take a good OOTD photo?

Shoot full length with the camera at about waist height, so legs don't look shortened. Stand near a window for soft light, clear the clutter behind you, and take a few frames mid-step or mid-turn. Then add one close-up of the detail you like most.

Why do shops post OOTD looks?

Because a full outfit shows what a single product photo can't: how pieces fit and go together. Shops that name each item, give the model's size and answer “link?” comments quickly make it easy to buy while the interest is fresh.
