Slang meaning

What does rizz mean?

Rizz is charm, especially the ability to attract someone you like. Someone with rizz knows what to say; someone with “no rizz” fumbles it. The word is cut from the middle of “charisma,” and Oxford University Press named it Word of the Year for 2023.

Charm or flirting skill: having rizz means you can win someone over, and to rizz someone up is to flirt with them.

Tone: playful and teasing; a compliment or a roast

What rizz can mean

1. Charm, especially when flirting

The main sense. Rizz is the knack of attracting someone, through confidence, good lines or just presence. You can have it, lack it or lose it: “his rizz is unmatched,” “I have zero rizz.” Oxford's definition covers style, charm or attractiveness, and the ability to attract a romantic partner.

2. To rizz (someone up)

As a verb, it means to charm or flirt with someone: “he rizzed her up at the bus stop,” “go rizz up the barista.” It also stretches beyond romance. Talking a teacher into an extension or a market seller into a discount can count as rizzing them.

3. A score for a move

Rizz gets graded. “W rizz” is a smooth move and “L rizz” a clumsy one, while “unspoken rizz” is charm without words, like a look or a confident nod. Someone who's good at it is a rizzler, and a hopeless attempt is “negative rizz.”

How people use it on Instagram and Facebook

  • Comments on couple posts and film clips

Under a proposal video or a smooth line in a film scene, comments rate the move: “the rizz is crazy,” “W rizz.” Under a fumbled approach it becomes “negative rizz” or “the rizz left the building.” It's mostly good-natured judging from strangers.

  • DMs and group chats

Friends ask each other for backup before replying to a crush, and screenshots captioned “how's my rizz?” are a common way to crowdsource the next message. The group's verdict is usually brutal and funny.

  • Captions and bios

Mostly self-mocking: “zero rizz, all heart,” “rizz levels: buffering.” In a bio it works the same way, as a joke at the owner's expense, and nobody reads it as a real boast.

  • Parents' questions on Facebook

Parents hear it when a child says a classmate “has rizz” or that they “rizzed up” a teacher. For most kids it means being charming or smooth, and any romance in it is usually just teasing between friends.

How to reply to rizz

Where it comes from

Rizz is clipped from the middle of “charisma,” which Oxford noted is unusual, though fridge (from refrigerator) and flu (from influenza) work the same way. A popular streamer is widely credited with spreading it around 2022, a celebrity interview in June 2023 gave it another push, and that December Oxford chose it as its Word of the Year. As of October 2026 it's still in everyday use, often ironically.

Questions people ask

Is rizz the same as game?

Pretty much. “Game,” as in “he's got game,” is the older slang for flirting skill. Rizz is the newer word, and it also works as a verb (“rizz her up”), which game doesn't in quite the same way.

What does “unspoken rizz” mean?

Charm without words: winning someone over with a look, a raised eyebrow or a confident walk, no lines needed. It's the opposite of the try-hard pickup line, and people often post it as a joke with an over-the-top facial expression.

Is rizz only about romance?

No. It started with flirting, but people now praise rizz in any charm offensive: talking a bouncer into letting the group in, getting a free upgrade, winning over a strict teacher. For kids especially, it often just means being smooth.

What do “no rizz” and “negative rizz” mean?

No rizz means someone can't flirt to save their life. Negative rizz is worse: the attempt made things more awkward than saying nothing. Both are usually teasing, and people say them about themselves as often as about anyone else.

Does rizz still work in brand captions?

Only with a wink. Once a word is Word of the Year, every kind of account starts using it, and forced uses get noticed. A self-aware line like “our candles have more rizz than us” can work for a young audience; used straight, it sounds like an adult imitating teenagers.
