What does mutuals mean?

Mutuals are people who follow each other: you follow them and they follow you back. The word also covers the friends or followers two people have in common, which is how Facebook uses “mutual friends.”

Mutuals are accounts that follow each other, or the friends and followers two people have in common.

Tone: friendly, familiar, sometimes teasing

What mutuals can mean

1. People who follow each other

The usual Instagram sense. If you follow someone and they follow you, you are mutuals. People say it to mean a closer circle than “followers”: “my mutuals saw the post first” points to people they actually know or chat with.

2. People you both know

Also used for the overlap between two accounts. Instagram shows a line such as “Followed by” a few names on a profile, and people call those names your mutuals with that account. On Facebook the same idea is labelled “mutual friends.”

3. A friendly label online

Among fans and creators, a mutual is someone whose posts you see and like regularly, even if you have never met. “Shout out to my mutuals” is a thank-you to that group, not a formal list.

How people use it on Instagram and Facebook

  • Captions and Stories

Common in lines like “mutuals only” or “my mutuals will understand.” It signals an in-joke or a post meant for people who know the poster, even though anyone with access can read it.

  • Instagram Notes and sharing

Notes let you pick an audience, and one option is followers you follow back. That is the mutuals idea built into the app, so people sometimes write “this is for mutuals” when they use it.

  • Comments and DMs

Used to claim a connection: “we're mutuals, so tell me.” It can also be a gentle way to ask someone to follow back, which can feel pushy if overdone.

  • Facebook profiles and groups

Here it is almost always “mutual friends.” Facebook shows how many you share with a person, which people use to judge whether a friend request or a Marketplace seller is real.

Questions people ask

What is the difference between mutuals and followers?

Followers are everyone who follows you, whether or not you follow them. Mutuals are the part of that group you follow back. Your mutual list is usually a lot smaller than your follower count.

How do I see my mutuals on Instagram?

Instagram has no single page called “mutuals.” Compare your followers and following lists, or open someone's profile to see which of the people you follow also follow them. Third-party apps that promise a mutuals list often ask for your password, which is a risk you should avoid.

Is a mutual the same as a friend?

Not necessarily. Mutual only means you follow each other. Some mutuals are close friends and some are strangers who like each other's posts. Instagram's Close Friends list is a separate thing you choose yourself.

What is the shorter version?

Some people write “moots” for mutuals, and “oomf” (one of my followers) for a single person. They point at the same circle of people, with a more fandom-style tone.
