What are Instagram saves?
Saves is the number of times people bookmarked one of your posts, Reels or videos to look at again later. It is a private action, so it shows up to you as a count. Meta publishes a definition for it, and a save rate is easy to work out.
Updated 6 October 2026
The number of times people bookmarked your post or Reel to come back to later. You see it as a count in your insights, and it is one of the interactions Meta reports.
How Meta defines it
In Meta’s developer documentation the account-level metric is called saves and is described as the number of saves of your posts, reels and videos. At the level of a single piece of media the same idea is named saved: the number of times your media was saved by an Instagram user. Both are part of the Instagram Platform insights that professional accounts can read.
Meta also lists saves among the interactions that make up total interactions (likes, saves, comments and shares, minus unlikes, unsaves and deleted comments). Two details from the same pages matter when numbers look odd: the data behind a metric can be delayed by up to 48 hours, and if a figure is not available the API returns an empty result rather than a zero.
The pages we read do not explain how Instagram uses saves when it ranks content, so nothing here claims that more saves mean more reach. Look at Instagram’s own ranking pages before repeating that claim.
Working out a save rate
A raw count is hard to compare across posts, because a Reel seen by 50,000 people will beat a carousel seen by 2,000 almost every time. Divide saves by reach for the same post, then multiply by 100. Reach is the better denominator than followers because it counts the people who actually saw the post.
| Post | Reach | Saves | Save rate |
|---|---|---|---|
| Recipe carousel | 4,000 | 120 | 3.0% |
| Behind-the-scenes Reel | 20,000 | 100 | 0.5% |
| Product announcement | 2,500 | 10 | 0.4% |
The Reel looks similar to the carousel by raw saves, yet the carousel’s rate is six times higher. That tells you which format people wanted to keep, not which one is better in every way.
What a low or high count tends to mean
- Posts people save are usually ones they plan to use: a recipe, a checklist, a price list, a workout, a packing list.
- Entertainment and announcements tend to collect likes and shares but fewer saves. That is normal, not a fault.
- If you want more saves, make the post worth coming back to. Ending with “save this for later” helps only when the content already deserves it.
- Look at saves next to shares and reach, not on their own.
Tip: Keep a note of your top five posts by save rate each month and look for what they have in common. A pattern in your own posts beats any benchmark you read online.
An example
A nutrition coach posts a seven-day meal plan carousel that reaches 3,000 people and gets 150 saves, a 5% save rate. A photo of her dog reaches 3,000 too and gets 3 saves. Same reach, very different intent.
Questions people ask
What does save mean on Instagram?
It means someone bookmarked your post, Reel or video so they can find it again later. It is a private action: you see how many saves a piece of content has, in the insights available to professional accounts.
How do I calculate a save rate?
Divide the saves on a post by that post’s reach and multiply by 100. For example, 60 saves on a post with reach of 2,000 is a 3% save rate. Use the same reach figure each time so posts can be compared fairly.
Do saves help a post reach more people?
The Meta pages we read define the metric but do not say how it affects ranking. Instagram’s own pages on ranking are the place to check. Treat any exact claim about how much a save is worth with caution.
Why can’t I see saves for some posts?
Meta says insights data can be delayed up to 48 hours and that missing data comes back as empty, not zero. Check your own app for what it shows on each type of post.
