What is an Instagram carousel?
A carousel is a single Instagram post that holds several photos or videos, which people swipe through one after another. It is one post with one caption, one set of likes and one comment thread, however many slides it has.
Updated 6 October 2026
One Instagram post made of several swipeable images or videos, with a single caption and a single comment thread. Meta’s publishing docs cap it at 10 items.
What Meta’s documentation says
The clearest numbers come from Meta’s content publishing guide, which covers posting through the Instagram Platform. It says a carousel post can hold up to 10 images, videos, or a mix of both. It describes the post as a container that lists the containers of each slide, and it counts as a single post.
The same guide has a cropping detail worth knowing. Carousel images are all cropped to match the first image in the carousel, with a 1:1 square as the default. So the first slide decides the shape of the rest. Plan your first image’s ratio before you design the others.
Those limits are written for publishing through the API, which is how scheduling tools and apps post. The Instagram app’s own limit and cropping options may differ or change, so check your own app before you build a long carousel.
One more rule from the guide, for apps that mark AI-made media: the AI disclosure setting goes on the carousel container, and setting it on an individual slide returns an error.
Why people use carousels
A carousel gives you room to teach in steps: a recipe in six slides, a checklist, a before and after, a product from five angles. Each swipe is a small action, and a post that is worth keeping tends to be saved. Meta reports saves as one of the insights for professional accounts, so you can compare a carousel’s saves against its reach.
Meta’s pages do not say how Instagram ranks carousels against other formats, so treat claims that carousels always get more reach as unproven until you see it in your own numbers.
Carousels and comment-to-DM
A carousel is a natural home for a comment trigger. End on a last slide that says “Comment GUIDE and I’ll send it”, and an automation can reply under each matching comment and open a DM. Remember that the first DM is plain text, and the link follows after the person replies.
Tip: Put the ask on the last slide and again in the caption. People who swipe all the way through are the ones most likely to act.
An example
A nutritionist posts a seven-slide carousel: a cover with the question, five slides with one swap each, and a closing slide that says “Comment SWAPS for the printable list”.
