What is lead generation?
Lead generation means attracting people who might buy and getting them to share a way to contact them, usually an email, a phone number or a message. The person is a lead until they buy or drop out.
Updated 6 October 2026
Collecting contact details from people who show interest in what you offer, so you can follow up. A lead is that person; generation is how you get them.
The basic exchange
Lead generation is a trade. You give something small and useful, such as a guide, a discount, a sample or an answer to a question. They give you permission to contact them. The trade works when what you give is worth more to them than the effort of giving their details.
The stages are the same wherever it happens. First, attention: a post, a Reel or an ad. Second, an offer with a clear next step. Third, a capture point such as a form, a link or a chat. Fourth, follow-up that turns interest into a conversation.
Routes on Facebook and Instagram
Meta’s own route is lead ads. Its developer guide says they give people “a quick and privacy-safe way to sign up to receive information from your business”, with a form that is mobile-friendly and uses information people already shared with Facebook. You need a Facebook Page, and an Instagram account only if you want to run the ad on Instagram. The leads belong to the Page either way.
You can read them from Meta Business Suite’s Leads Center, in bulk through the API or by webhook in real time. Apps that fetch leads through the API must pass App Review, according to the same guide.
The organic routes are older and cheaper. A link in your bio to a sign-up page, a post that says “comment GUIDE and I will send it”, or a DM keyword that starts a chat can all collect an email. The person starts the exchange, which is a plus for trust.
Judging whether it works
- Volume: how many leads this week, from which source.
- Cost per lead: ad spend divided by paid leads.
- Quality: how many replied, booked or bought.
- Speed: how long before the first reply.
Tip: Do not buy lists and do not add people to emails they did not ask for. Consent is the difference between a lead and a spam complaint, and email laws differ by country. Check the rules where your audience lives.
An example
A mortgage adviser posts a Reel about first-time-buyer mistakes and invites viewers to comment CHECKLIST. Each commenter gets a message asking for their email, then a link to a checklist. A week later, 120 people have joined her list.
Questions people ask
What is lead generation in simple terms?
It is getting interested people to share their contact details so you can follow up. A lead is one such person. You attract them with content or ads, offer something useful, and capture a way to reach them.
How does lead generation work on Instagram?
Common routes are lead ads that open a form, a link in your bio to a sign-up page, and DM conversations started from comments or Stories. Meta’s lead ads can run on Instagram, though the leads are stored with your Facebook Page.
What is the difference between a lead and a customer?
A lead has shown interest and shared contact details but has not bought. A customer has paid. Most businesses also track the stages between, such as qualified lead or booked call.
What is a lead magnet?
A lead magnet is the free item you offer in exchange for contact details, for example a checklist, a template or a short video. It is one of the most common ways to generate leads.
Is it legal to email someone who gave their details in a DM?
It depends on the country and on what they agreed to. Say plainly what you will send and let people opt out. Rules differ between regions, so check your local law and any platform terms.
