What is cost per lead?
Cost per lead, or CPL, is how much you spend to get one person to hand over their details. Divide ad spend by the number of leads. The hard part is deciding what counts as a lead.
Updated 6 October 2026
The average you spend to collect one lead, such as a sign-up or an email address. Work it out as total spend divided by the number of leads.
Formula and example
CPL = total spend ÷ number of leads. If an ad cost $150 and produced 50 sign-ups, CPL is $3. Meta’s insights reference lists a general field for the average cost of a relevant action, broken down by action type, so the cost of a lead action is reported the same way as the cost of any other result. Which actions appear depends on how your ads and tracking are set up.
The spend half is easy. The leads half is yours to define. A lead can be a form submission, an email left in a DM, a booked call, or a download. Pick one meaning and use it every time, or last month’s CPL will not compare with this month’s.
Cheap leads and good leads
A $3 lead who never replies costs more than a $12 lead who buys. Meta’s lead ads guide points at the same problem: it describes sharing your CRM data about which leads turned out to be quality ones back to Meta, so it can optimise for quality rather than volume.
Track cost per qualified lead as well. Say the $150 campaign above gave 50 leads, and 10 of them were people you could actually serve. The cost per qualified lead is $15, five times the headline CPL. That is the number to set against what a customer is worth.
| Measure | Calculation | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Cost per lead | $150 ÷ 50 leads | $3 |
| Cost per qualified lead | $150 ÷ 10 qualified | $15 |
| Cost per customer | $150 ÷ 3 buyers | $50 |
Cutting CPL without lowering quality
- Make the offer specific. A “free 7-day meal plan” attracts people who want one. A vague newsletter attracts anyone.
- Ask for less. Each extra field on a form or question in a chat loses some people, though it can also filter out time-wasters.
- Answer fast. A lead who gets a reply in minutes is more likely to stay warm, and an automated first reply costs you nothing per lead.
Tip: Count free leads too. Email addresses collected through comment-to-DM replies have no ad cost, so your blended CPL across paid and organic is lower than the ad-only figure.
An example
A personal trainer spends $200 on a lead ad for a free 5-day plan and collects 80 emails, a CPL of $2.50. Eight of them book a trial, so the cost per booking is $25.
Questions people ask
What does CPL stand for?
Cost per lead. It is the average amount you pay to collect one lead, such as an email address or form submission. It is total spend divided by the number of leads in the same period.
How do I calculate cost per lead?
Divide what you spent by how many leads you got. If you spent $180 and collected 60 emails, the cost per lead is $3. Use the same dates for spend and leads, and count only the leads you have defined.
What is a good cost per lead?
It depends on what a customer is worth to you. A CPL is good if the cost per customer it implies still leaves a profit. We have no cited benchmark, so compare against your own sales and margins.
Does cost per lead include organic leads?
Usually it covers only paid leads, because only paid leads have a spend to divide. You can calculate a blended CPL by dividing the ad spend by paid and organic leads together, but label it so nobody mistakes the two.
Where do I find CPL in Meta’s reports?
Meta’s insights API offers cost per action by action type, which includes the cost of a lead action when your ads track one. Ads Manager shows cost figures per result too, but check your own account for the exact column names.
