What is reach on Instagram?
Reach is the number of different accounts that saw your content at least once. If one person watches your Reel five times, that’s five views but a reach of one, which is why reach is the better count of how many people you actually got in front of.
Updated 6 October 2026
Reach is the number of unique accounts that saw a post, Reel or Story at least once. An account that sees it again doesn’t add to it.
Reach, views and impressions
| Metric | What it counts | One person watches a Reel 3 times |
|---|---|---|
| Reach | Unique accounts that saw it at least once | 1 |
| Views | Every time it was played or shown, repeats included | 3 |
| Impressions | Times it was shown; views have replaced it in Meta’s Instagram API | 3 |
Instagram now leads with views across formats, and Meta deprecated impressions in its Instagram API for all versions from April 21, 2025, adding views in its place. Reach stayed because it answers a different question: not how often your content was shown, but to how many people.
The ratios built on reach
On its own, reach mostly tells you size. The useful numbers come from dividing by it:
- Reach rate = reach ÷ followers × 100. The share of your follower count that a post reached. It can pass 100% when a post travels beyond your followers.
- Engagement rate by reach = (likes + comments + shares + saves) ÷ reach × 100. It judges a post by the people who actually saw it, not by follower count.
- Views per account = views ÷ reach. Anything above 1 means some people watched more than once.
With round numbers: a Reel on an account with 10,000 followers gets 15,000 views from 12,000 accounts, plus 600 likes, comments, shares and saves. Reach rate is 12,000 ÷ 10,000 = 120%. Engagement rate by reach is 600 ÷ 12,000 = 5%. Views per account come to 15,000 ÷ 12,000 = 1.25.
Typical rates vary too much by niche, account size and format for one benchmark to be fair, so compare each post with your own recent posts of the same format.
Where to find reach, and what it hides
- It’s in Insights, which Instagram’s Help Center says is free if you have a public account. Its insights article calls the unique-accounts count Viewers, “the number of unique accounts that have seen your content on screen at least once”, the same definition developers use for reach. You can pick a period within the past 90 days.
- Account reach isn’t the sum of post reach. Someone who saw five of your posts this week counts once in the weekly total but once in each of the five posts.
- Reach is private. Only the account, and people with access to its Insights, can see it. On someone else’s profile you’re working from public numbers: comments, plus likes and Reel views where they’re shown.
- Meta’s ad tools count reach the same way and pair it with frequency, the average number of times each account saw an ad.
Using reach to judge a comment-to-DM post
When a post asks people to comment a word to get something by DM, reach is the fair denominator. Divide the comments containing the keyword by the post’s reach: 240 keyword comments from 8,000 accounts reached is a 3% response. That lets you compare two offers even when one post travelled much further than the other.
An example
A Story is watched 1,100 times by 900 accounts, because some people tapped back to see it again. Its reach is 900 and its views are 1,100.
Questions people ask
What is a good reach on Instagram?
There’s no single number. Reach depends on follower count, format and how far a post travels outside your followers. A fairer test is how a post’s reach rate compares with the last few posts you published in the same format.
Why is my reach lower than my views?
That’s expected. Views count every showing, so a person who watches twice adds two views but only one account to your reach.
Can reach be higher than my follower count?
Yes. Reach counts every account that saw the post, including non-followers who found it through Reels, Explore, hashtags or shares. Insights shows how your reach splits between followers and non-followers.
Can I see reach on a personal account?
Possibly. Instagram’s Help Center says free insights are available if you have a public account, and its dashboards article tells people with a personal account to tap Your dashboard below Your insights and tools, after setting the account to public. What you get can vary by account type, region and eligibility, so check your own app. A professional account adds the professional dashboard and extra monetization insights, and you can switch back to personal later.
