What are Instagram profile visits?
Profile visits is the number of times people opened your Instagram profile. It sits between seeing a post and taking an action, so it shows who got curious. Meta defines the metric for posts and Stories, and you can turn it into a rate to compare content.
Updated 6 October 2026
The number of times your Instagram profile was opened. It shows curiosity after someone sees your content, before they follow, tap a button or visit your link.
What Meta says it measures
In Meta’s Instagram media insights documentation, profile_visits is defined as the number of times your profile was visited, and it is listed for feed posts and Stories. A related metric, profile_activity, covers the actions people take when they visit your profile after engaging with your post, and can be split by action type.
The account-level insights page we read lists metrics such as follows_and_unfollows and profile_links_taps (taps on your address, call, email and text buttons), but we did not find an account-wide profile visits metric there. If your own app shows a total for the account, it is using its own report, so read the label in your app.
Turning it into a visit rate
To compare posts, divide profile visits by reach and multiply by 100. If a post reached 5,000 people and led to 150 profile visits, the visit rate is 3%. A second post with 90 visits from 1,500 reach is 6%, which means it moved a larger share of its viewers to look at you, even though it brought fewer people in total.
| What you see | A likely reading |
|---|---|
| High reach, few visits | The content entertained but gave no reason to look at you |
| Low reach, many visits | A small audience was curious about the person or the offer |
| Many visits, few follows | The profile itself, such as the bio or highlights, did not convince them |
What to do with it
- A visit is the moment your bio, photo, highlights and link get read. Check them on a phone before you worry about posting more.
- Posts that say who you are or what you sell, in the first line, tend to send more people to your profile than posts that only entertain.
- Pair visits with follows and with taps on your contact buttons to see where people stop. Meta reports follows and unfollows as a separate metric and does not return it for accounts with fewer than 100 followers.
- Look at the trend over several weeks, not a single day. Data can arrive up to 48 hours late.
Tip: Open your own profile as a stranger would, with no context, and ask what it offers in five seconds. If you cannot tell, neither can the people who just visited.
An example
A candle maker’s Reel reaches 10,000 people and drives 400 profile visits, a 4% visit rate. Her bio only says “Candles ✨”, so few follow. After she rewrites it to name her scents and shipping area, the next Reel with the same visit rate gets noticeably more follows.
Questions people ask
What does profile visits mean on Instagram?
It is the number of times your profile was opened. Meta’s documentation defines the metric as the number of times your profile was visited, for feed posts and Stories, so it measures curiosity that follows content people have seen.
How do I work out a profile visit rate?
Divide profile visits by reach for the same post and multiply by 100. As an example, 120 visits on a post that reached 4,000 people is a 3% rate. Use the same reach number each time so different posts line up fairly.
Why do I have many profile visits but few new followers?
It usually means people were curious, then the profile did not give them enough reason to follow. Review the bio, the first nine grid posts, your highlights and the link. Meta’s follows and unfollows metric is a separate figure.
Can I see who visited my profile?
The Meta documentation we read gives a count of visits only and no list of people. Your own app is the place to check what it shows, and no tool should promise otherwise.
