What is a call to action (CTA)?
A call to action is the instruction that tells someone what to do next: “Book now”, “Reply YES”, “Download the guide”. It can be a button, a line in a caption or the last line of a Reel. Without one, interested people drift away.

A prompt that tells your audience the next step, such as Sign up, Book now or Comment GUIDE. It can be a button in an ad or words in a post or video.
Where CTAs appear
In ads, a CTA is usually a button. Meta’s Marketing API treats it as a defined field on link and video ads, and the list of button types it accepts is long. It includes Learn more, Sign up, Shop now, Book now, Get quote, Download, Apply now, Contact us and Send message. The reference also warns that some buttons are not supported in Stories, such as Call now and Get directions.
In organic content, a CTA is just words. It can be the final line of a caption (“Save this for later”), a spoken line near the end of a Reel (“Comment GUIDE and I’ll message it to you”), a text sticker on a Story, or the first line of your bio.
What makes one work
- One action per piece. “Follow, like, share and visit my link” asks for four things and gets none.
- A verb the person can do now. “Reply YES” beats “Let us know your thoughts”.
- A reason. “Comment GUIDE to get the free checklist” says what happens next.
- A low-effort step first. A comment or a tap is easier than a purchase.
Match the ask to the audience’s stage. Someone who has never heard of you will not click “Buy now”. Someone watching a long demo is ready for “Book a call”.
Common mistakes
- Hiding it. A CTA buried mid-paragraph in a long caption is missed.
- Promising what the next step does not deliver. If the button says “Get the guide”, the link must open the guide.
- Using a CTA button that does not fit the goal. A “Learn more” button on an ad for an event with limited seats wastes the urgency.
Tip: Test one change at a time, such as “Book now” against “Get a quote”, and compare click-through rate and cost per result. Judge by what people do after the click, not the clicks alone.
An example
A hair stylist ends a Reel of a colour transformation with “Comment BOOK and I’ll send you my open slots.” The caption repeats it, and the Story that follows has a sticker saying the same thing.
Questions people ask
What does CTA stand for?
Call to action. It is the prompt that asks your audience to take a specific next step, such as signing up, buying, booking or replying. It can be a button or plain words in a caption, video or message.
What are good CTA examples?
“Comment GUIDE for the checklist”, “Book a free 15-minute call”, “Tap the link to see prices”, “Reply YES and I’ll send it”. Each asks for one clear action and says what the person gets.
What CTA buttons can I add to Facebook and Instagram ads?
Meta’s Marketing API reference lists many, including Learn more, Sign up, Shop now, Book now, Get quote, Download, Apply now and Send message. Which ones are on offer depends on the ad format and objective, so check your own Ads Manager.
Where should a CTA go in a Reel?
Near the end, spoken or in text, and often in the caption as well. People who watch to the end are the most interested. A short CTA early in the video can catch people who do not stay.
Can I use more than one CTA?
You can, but they compete. A primary action and a quiet secondary one, such as “Book now” plus “Save for later”, is workable. A list of four asks is not.
