What does Restrict do on Instagram?
Restrict lets you limit someone on Instagram without telling them. Their comments on your posts become visible only to them unless you approve them, their messages move to your message requests, and they can’t see when you’re online or when you’ve read their DMs.
Updated 6 October 2026
Restrict quietly limits one Instagram account: their comments on your posts are hidden from others, and they can’t see when you’re online or have read their DMs.
What changes when you restrict someone
- Comments: their comments on your posts are visible only to them. You can tap “See comment” to read one, approve it so everyone can see it, delete it or simply leave it.
- Notifications: you stop getting notified about their comments.
- Messages: their chat moves to your message requests, and they can’t see when you’ve read what they sent.
- Online status: they can’t see when you’re active on Instagram.
- Tags, mentions and remixes: they can no longer tag or mention you, or remix your content.
What stays the same matters just as much. They can still follow you, see your posts and stories, and send you messages, and Instagram doesn’t alert them. The person carries on as usual while their comments reach nobody but themselves, so there’s no block for them to react to.
Restrict vs mute vs block
| Question | Restrict | Mute | Block |
|---|---|---|---|
| Is the person told? | No | No | No |
| Can they see your posts? | Yes | Yes | No, and they can’t find your profile in search |
| Can they message you? | Yes, into your message requests | Yes, as normal | No |
| Their comments on your posts | Visible only to them unless you approve | Unchanged | Not possible |
| Best for | Limiting someone without a confrontation | Still following someone while hiding their posts, stories or messages | Cutting contact completely |
Block reaches further than it looks: when you block someone, you can also block other accounts they have and any new ones they make. Reporting is separate from all three and anonymous, so use it when a comment, message or account breaks Instagram’s rules.
How to restrict someone
- Open your chat with them and tap their name at the top.
- Tap the options menu and choose Restrict.
- Confirm by tapping Restrict account.
If you’ve never chatted, you can restrict them from their profile instead. To undo it, go back to the same place and choose Unrestrict, and their comments will show up normally again.
When Restrict suits a business account
Brands and creators often have a comment regular who isn’t quite abusive enough to block: the account that writes “scam” under every giveaway, or a past customer replaying a complaint you already settled. Deleting each comment invites a louder reaction, and a block can become a post about being blocked. Restrict takes their comments out of view and lets you approve the odd fair one.
It works one account at a time, so it’s the wrong tool for spam arriving from many accounts. Hidden Words, Instagram’s filter for comments and message requests containing words you choose, copes with that better.
An example
A former customer leaves a sarcastic comment under every new Reel. You restrict them: they still see their own comments, your followers don’t, and you approve one only if it adds something.
Questions people ask
Will someone know I restricted them?
Instagram doesn’t tell them. They might guess if their comments never get a reaction or your online status disappears, but no notice is sent.
Can a restricted account see my stories?
Yes. Restrict doesn’t hide your posts or stories. To keep one person off your stories, hide your story from them in your story settings, or block them.
Should I restrict or block a troll?
Restrict suits someone who is mostly noise: they keep commenting, nobody else sees it and nothing escalates. Block when there are threats, harassment or impersonation, and report anything that breaks Instagram’s rules, since reports are anonymous.
Where do I find the accounts I’ve restricted?
Your Instagram settings include a list of restricted accounts, alongside the other controls for how people can interact with you. You can unrestrict anyone from that list.
