How to repost on Instagram
To repost on Instagram, tap the repost icon on a public Reel or feed post, add a note if you like, and save. Instagram added the button in August 2025. The post stays credited to whoever made it, can show up in your followers’ feeds, and is listed on a Reposts tab on your profile, apart from your own grid.
Updated 6 October 2026
On Instagram, a repost shares someone else’s public Reel or feed post with your followers, keeps the creator credited and lists it on your profile.
How reposting works
- Open a public Reel or feed post in the Instagram app and tap the repost icon, the pair of arrows beside the like, comment and share buttons.
- To add a note, tap the bubble by your profile picture at the bottom left of the Reel or post, type it and tap Save. The note is optional.
- Find everything you’ve reposted on the Reposts tab of your profile.
- Only public Reels and feed posts can be reposted. Posts from private accounts don’t offer the option.
- Instagram’s Help Center says you can only repost if the original creator allows reposts of their content, and that only content posted by the original creator can be reposted, so you can’t repost a repost.
- The button is in the Instagram app for iPhone, iPad and Android. It isn’t available on a computer.
- The repost stays credited to the original poster. It never becomes your post.
- Other people can comment on your repost, and the Help Center says those comments arrive as direct messages to you.
- Instagram may recommend your reposts in your friends’ and followers’ feeds, which can carry the original to people who have never seen its creator’s account.
Repost, Story share, DM or re-upload?
Instagram gives you several ways to pass on someone else’s post, and they reach different people for different lengths of time.
| Method | Who sees it | Credit |
|---|---|---|
| Repost button | Your friends and followers, recommended in their feeds, plus visitors to your Reposts tab | The creator stays credited automatically |
| Share to your Story | Your Story viewers for 24 hours, or longer in a Highlight; they can tap through to the post | The original account’s name shows with the post |
| Send in a DM | Only the people in that chat | The post opens on the creator’s account |
| Download and re-upload | Your grid, as your own post | Only what you write, so ask first and name them |
| Collab post | Both accounts’ followers, from one shared post | Both names, once the invite is accepted |
If the repost icon is missing, check the basics: the post may come from a private account, or you may be on a computer. Sharing to Stories is a separate switch, and creators can turn it off for their own posts in their settings.
Reposts on a business account
When a customer posts a public Reel of your product, the repost button is the most direct way to show it to your followers. Their name stays on it, the video never leaves their account, and it sits on your Reposts tab instead of breaking up a grid you planned.
Anything beyond the button needs a yes from the creator. Downloading their photo, cropping off their handle or using it in an ad turns their post into your content. Instagram’s community guidelines ask people to post only what they’ve made or have the right to share, so ask in a DM, keep the reply and name them in the caption.
It works the other way too. When followers repost your Reel, Instagram may show it to their followers, who might never have seen your account. A repost points to your original post rather than a copy, so a clear caption and a clear next step, such as a word to comment for a free guide, go along with it. If you’d rather not allow it, the Help Center says you can choose whether people may repost your content: open your menu, tap Sharing and reuse, and use the Reposts on posts and reels toggle.
An example
A ceramics studio finds a customer’s public Reel unboxing one of its mugs. It taps the repost icon, adds the note “Midnight blue glaze, back in stock Friday,” and the Reel can now reach the studio’s followers with the customer still credited.
Questions people ask
Where can I see my reposts on Instagram?
On your own profile, in the Reposts tab. Everything you’ve reposted is collected there, separate from the posts and Reels you made yourself, so you can go back to any of them.
Can my followers see what I repost?
Yes. Instagram can recommend your reposts in your friends’ and followers’ feeds, and the Reposts tab on your profile lists them. If you’d rather pass a post on quietly, send it in a DM instead.
Why can’t I repost a post?
Instagram’s Help Center points to a few reasons. Only public reels and posts can be reposted, the original creator has to allow reposts of their content, you can’t repost a repost, and the feature isn’t available on computers. Try the app on your phone or iPad, and note it may not be available to everyone yet.
How do I undo a repost?
Open the post, from your Reposts tab or wherever you find it, and tap the repost icon again. It comes off your Reposts tab, and the original post isn’t affected.
Is a repost the same as sharing to my Story?
No. A Story share disappears after 24 hours unless you add it to a Highlight, and only your Story viewers see it. A repost stays on your Reposts tab until you remove it and can be recommended in feeds.
Do I need permission to repost someone’s post?
Not for the button. Instagram lets you repost a public Reel or feed post if its creator allows reposts of their content, and the creator stays credited. Downloading the file and posting it as your own is a different matter: ask the creator first and name them.
