What does archive mean on Instagram?

Archiving a post on Instagram takes it off your profile without deleting it. Only you can see it afterwards, nobody is notified, and its likes and comments are kept, so you can put it back in its original spot whenever you like. Stories have an archive too: Instagram saves each one there privately when it expires.

Archive is a private section of your Instagram account that holds posts you’ve hidden from your profile and Stories that have expired. Only you can see it.

Instagram features

How to archive a post and bring it back

  1. Open the post on your profile and tap the three dots at the top.
  2. Tap Archive. The post leaves your profile at once, and nobody is told.
  3. To find it later, open the menu at the top right of your profile and tap Archive.
  4. Open the archived post, tap the three dots and choose Show on profile. It goes back to its original place in your grid, among posts from the same weeks, not to the top.

Archiving changes nothing about the post itself. When it comes back, the caption, likes and comments are all still there, including ones people left years ago. While it’s archived, though, nobody else can open it, comment on it or reach it through a link they saved.

For a bigger clear-out, open Your activity from the same menu. It lets you select several posts and archive them together, which is quicker than reworking a grid one post at a time.

What else is in your archive

  • Stories archive: every Story you post is saved here when it disappears after 24 hours, as long as the setting is on. Nobody else can see these, and they’re the pool you build Highlights from.
  • Posts archive: everything you’ve taken off your profile with the Archive button, each post still carrying its likes and comments.
  • Live archive: if you go Live, past broadcasts are kept here for a limited time so you can watch them back.

Saving Stories to the archive is on unless you switch it off in your settings. With it off, a Story is gone for good after its 24 hours, unless you saved it to your phone or added it to a Highlight first.

On Facebook the word means much the same: posts and Stories you archive are kept where only you can see them. In Messenger, archiving a chat simply tucks it out of your chat list until that person messages you again.

Archive anything you might want again: a product that sold out, a price that changed, an offer that ended, a photo that no longer fits your look. Delete what should never come back, like a duplicate or a post with a mistake you don’t want resurfacing.

Archiving on a business account

Shops and creators archive for the same reason a shop changes its window: the sale ended, the stock ran out, the prices went up. Because the comments survive, a seasonal post can return next year with its questions, answers and praise intact, which a fresh post would have to earn all over again.

Restoring doesn’t make a post new. It slots back in at its original date, often far down your grid, so followers won’t notice it’s back unless you tell them in a new post or a Story.

Tip: Check for automations before you archive. If a post asks people to comment a word, such as GUIDE, to get a link by DM, archiving it stops new comments because nobody else can see it. Messages already sent stay in your inbox; point people to the new post from your bio or Stories.

An example

When its pumpkin pie sells out in December, a bakery archives the post. The next October it taps Show on profile: the post returns to last year’s spot in the grid with all 140 comments, and a new Story tells followers it’s back.

Questions people ask

Does anyone know when I archive a post?

No. Instagram sends no notice to your followers or to anyone tagged in the post. It simply stops appearing on your profile, and people who saved it or kept its link can’t open it until you show it on your profile again.

Do archived posts keep their likes and comments?

Yes. Choose Show on profile and the post comes back exactly as it was, with the same likes, comments and caption, in the same place in your grid.

Can people still see archived Stories in my Highlights?

Yes. The Stories archive itself is private, but any Story you’ve added to a Highlight stays visible there. Remove it from the Highlight as well if you want it off your profile completely.

Can I archive someone else’s post?

No, Archive only works on posts you’ve shared yourself. If you’re tired of seeing another account’s posts, mute them instead: they aren’t told, and you can unmute them whenever you like.
