What are impressions?

Impressions are the number of times something appeared on a screen: a post, a Reel, a Story or an ad. One person who scrolls past your post three times adds three impressions. On Instagram, Meta’s API stopped reporting them for media created after July 2, 2024, while Meta’s ad reports still count them and work out their cost per thousand.

Updated 6 October 2026

Impressions are the number of times content or an ad was shown on a screen, counting repeat showings to the same person. Reach counts the people instead.

Metrics

How impressions add up

Every appearance counts, whoever it’s for. A follower who sees your post in their feed in the morning and again on your profile at night adds two impressions; ten strangers who each see it once add ten. Impressions measure exposure, not attention: they say the content was on a screen, not that anyone stopped for it.

That’s why impressions are usually read next to reach. Divide impressions by reach and you get frequency, the average number of times each account saw the content. A post with 15,000 impressions across 10,000 accounts has a frequency of 1.5.

Where impressions went on Instagram

Meta’s current documentation marks impressions as deprecated for any Instagram post or Reel created after July 2, 2024. Media published before that date still returns the number. Newer media reports views instead, which Meta defines as the total number of times the media has been played on Instagram. Most analytics and scheduling apps read your numbers through Meta’s API, so they follow the same split.

Where you lookWhat you’ll find
Instagram posts and Reels from before July 2, 2024Impressions, still available through Meta’s API
Instagram posts and Reels created after that dateViews in place of impressions
Meta ad reportsImpressions, with CPM and frequency worked out from them
Other apps and ad networksTheir own definitions, so their numbers don’t compare one to one

Tip: Keeping your own spreadsheet? Start a new column for views rather than carrying on the impressions one. The two are defined differently, so a jump or a dip at the changeover says more about the metric than about your content.

Impressions in ads: CPM, frequency and CTR

Ads are where impressions still do the most work, because ad costs are compared per thousand of them. Three formulas cover most of it, shown here with round numbers you can check:

  • CPM, the cost per 1,000 impressions = spend ÷ impressions × 1,000. Spending $60 for 24,000 impressions is a CPM of $2.50.
  • Frequency = impressions ÷ reach. Those 24,000 impressions shown to 8,000 people give a frequency of 3: on average, each person saw the ad three times.
  • Click-through rate = link clicks ÷ impressions × 100. 360 clicks on 24,000 impressions is a CTR of 1.5%.

Read frequency next to results. When it keeps climbing while clicks or sales fade, the ad is mostly reaching the same people again, and it may be time for a new creative or a wider audience.

Common mistakes with impressions

  • Quoting impressions as audience size. A post with 10,000 impressions may have reached 4,000 accounts, and reach is the number for people.
  • Comparing platforms number for number. Each app decides what counts as being shown, so their impressions aren’t the same unit.
  • Treating impressions as interest. Saves, shares, replies and clicks show whether people cared; impressions only show the content was on a screen.

An example

A café’s Reel appears on screen 9,000 times for 4,500 different accounts. That’s 9,000 impressions, a reach of 4,500 and an average frequency of 2.

Questions people ask

Are impressions the same as views?

Close, but not identical. Meta’s documentation defines impressions as the number of times media was seen and views as the number of times it was played. Both count repeat showings. For Instagram posts created after July 2, 2024, views is the one Meta reports.

Does scrolling past a post count as an impression?

Generally, yes. An impression means the content appeared on someone’s screen, not that they stopped to look. That’s why impressions run far ahead of any sign of attention, and why saves, shares and replies say more about whether a post worked.

Why can’t I find impressions for my recent Instagram posts?

Meta retired the impressions metric for Instagram media created after July 2, 2024. Look for views instead, and use reach for the number of different accounts. Posts from before that date can still show impressions in tools that read Meta’s API.

Do impressions still matter for ads?

Yes. Meta’s ad reports still count impressions, and CPM, the cost of 1,000 of them, is the usual way to compare what different audiences or placements cost. Frequency, worked out from impressions and reach, shows how often the same people are seeing an ad.

Is a high number of impressions good?

Only alongside other numbers. Lots of impressions with a low reach means the same people saw the content many times; lots of both with few saves, replies or clicks means it was seen and skipped. Judge it against your own recent posts or ads.
