What happens when you mute someone on Instagram?
Muting someone on Instagram hides what they share from your feed and Stories, or silences their messages, while you keep following them. They aren’t told, and nothing changes on their side: they can still see your posts, comment and message you.
Updated 6 October 2026
Mute hides an account’s posts, Stories or Notes from you, or silences a chat’s notifications, without unfollowing them. The account isn’t told.
What you can mute
| Mute | Where | What changes for you |
|---|---|---|
| Posts | Their profile: tap Following, then Mute | Their posts stop appearing in your feed |
| Stories | Their profile, the same way, or tap and hold their picture at the top of your feed | Their Stories no longer show in the bar at the top of your feed |
| Notes | Tap and hold their note in your inbox, then Mute notes | Their notes stop showing at the top of your inbox |
| Messages | Inside the chat: tap the name at the top, then Mute | New messages arrive without a notification |
| Calls | The same Mute screen inside the chat | Their calls no longer alert you |
Each one is its own switch. Muting someone’s posts, Stories or messages doesn’t mute their Notes, which need their own setting, and muting a chat leaves their posts in your feed.
What the muted person notices
Nothing. Instagram doesn’t tell anyone they’ve been muted, and their account works as before: they can see your posts and Stories, like and comment, tag you and send you messages. You still follow them, and their profile still shows everything if you go looking.
A few things still reach you as well. You’re notified about comments and posts they tag you in, and a muted chat keeps collecting messages, only without the alert. They may notice you’ve stopped reacting, but nothing in the app tells them why.
When mute is the wrong tool
Mute only changes what you see. It does nothing about what someone does on your account, so a muted person’s comments under your posts stay visible to everyone. For a commenter you’d rather keep out of view, Restrict or Hidden Words fits better, and blocking ends contact.
- Mute suits people you can’t easily unfollow: a supplier, a collaborator or a relative whose daily posts you don’t need.
- Think twice before muting a chat where customers ask about orders or bookings. The messages still arrive, silently, and can sit unanswered for days.
- To pause all your notifications for a few hours, rather than one person’s, use Instagram’s Quiet mode instead.
An example
A friend posts thirty Stories from every concert. You mute their Stories but keep their posts, so the photo dump still reaches your feed, the shaky videos don’t, and they never find out.
Questions people ask
Can someone tell that I muted them?
Not from Instagram. No notice is sent and their account looks the same to them. They might guess if you stop reacting to their Stories, but nothing confirms it.
How do I unmute someone?
Open their profile, tap Following, then Mute, and switch off the toggle for Posts, Stories or Notes. For a chat, tap the name at the top of the chat, tap Mute and switch off Mute messages or Mute calls.
If I mute someone, can they still see my posts?
Yes. Mute works in one direction only. They still see everything you share and can comment, tag and message you. To limit what they can do, use Restrict, or Block to cut contact.
Why does my Reel say its audio is muted?
That’s a different kind of mute. Instagram’s Help Center says changes to its agreements with music rights holders may result in a Reel’s audio being muted. Its article explains how to replace the muted audio with a track from Instagram’s audio library, which you can do only once for a muted track.
Does Facebook have a mute button?
Mostly under other names. Snooze hides a person’s or Page’s posts from your feed for 30 days, Unfollow hides them until you follow again, and Messenger lets you mute the notifications from a single chat.
