How does Close Friends work on Instagram?
Close Friends is a private list you build on Instagram so you can share Stories, Reels and Notes with only the people on it. Nobody is told when you add or remove them; people on the list just see a “Close friends” label, and sometimes a green ring, on what you share with them.

Close Friends is a list of people you pick on Instagram. Stories, Reels and Notes you share to it are seen only by the people on that list.
Setting up the list
- Open your settings and, under “Who can see your content,” choose Close Friends.
- Tap Select next to each person you want on the list.
- When you share a Story, Reel or Note, choose Close Friends as the audience instead of all your followers.
Edit the list whenever you like. Nobody is notified when you add them or when you take them off; people you remove simply stop seeing what you share to the list.
What people on the list see
- A “Close friends” label on the Story, Reel or Note, which is how they learn they’re on your list.
- A green ring around your profile photo, which Instagram says they may also see.
- Not the list itself. Only you can see it, and no one can request to be added. But if someone on the list likes, comments on or shares your Close Friends Reel, the others on the list can see their username and how they interacted.
Tip: Anyone on the list can still screenshot or screen-record what you share, so a small audience isn’t the same as a private one.
How creators and shops use it
Because the list is hand-picked and quiet, accounts use it for an inner circle: a first look at a product drop for repeat customers, rough cuts for a few trusted followers, or extra Stories for members of a paid community.
The catch is that everything is manual. Each name is added and removed by hand, and Close Friends has no payments or expiry dates, so running a paid list means tracking who has paid yourself. Where it’s available to you, Instagram’s Subscriptions feature handles billing and subscriber-only content instead.
Replies to a Close Friends Story land in your DMs like replies to any other Story. That makes the list a handy place to ask a small group a question, such as which of two colours to restock.
An example
A candle shop adds its 40 most regular customers to Close Friends and posts a new scent there a day early. Those customers see the “Close friends” label; everyone else sees the launch the next morning.
Questions people ask
Does someone know when I add them to Close Friends?
Not when you add them. They find out the first time they see something you’ve shared to the list, because it carries a “Close friends” label. Taking them off the list is just as quiet.
Can people see who else is on my Close Friends list?
Not the list itself: only you can see it. But Instagram’s Help Center says that if someone on your list likes, comments on or shares your Close Friends reel, the others on your list can see their username and how they interacted with it.
What’s the difference between Close Friends and hiding my Story?
They work in opposite directions. Close Friends shares a Story with only the people you’ve picked. Hiding your Story from someone shares with everyone except the people you’ve picked, and it covers all your Stories until you change it.
Why is there a green circle around someone’s Story?
They’ve added you to their Close Friends list, and that Story was shared with the list only. The circle says nothing about whether they’re online right now; that’s what the green dot in your messages is for.
