What does the green dot mean on Instagram?
A green dot on someone’s profile photo in your Instagram messages means they’re using Instagram right now. You only see it for people you’re linked to by a follow or a chat, and only while both of you have activity status turned on.

A green dot on someone’s photo in your Instagram or Messenger chats means they’re in the app right now. When they leave, it becomes a note like “Active 20m ago.”
Why some people show a dot and others don’t
The dot follows a rule about who follows whom and who has chatted. Instagram’s Help Center words it from two sides. One article says people you follow and anyone you message will see when you’re active. Another says you can see when an account you follow, or anyone you message, is active, when you both have Activity Status turned on. Either way a follow or a conversation is the link, and both statuses must be on. If a dot is missing where you expect one, check which of those isn’t true.
- Linked by a follow or a chat, and both of you have activity status on: a dot or a time stamp can show.
- Not linked, for example neither of you follows the other and you’ve never messaged: no dot, however often they’re online.
- They’ve turned activity status off: you won’t see their dot.
- You’ve turned yours off: every dot disappears for you, because the setting works in both directions.
What the dot can’t tell you
A green dot says the app is open, nothing more. It doesn’t mean the person has your chat on screen, has read your last message or is looking at your profile. “Seen” under a message is a separate signal with its own setting, and Instagram doesn’t tell anyone who has viewed their profile.
Nor does it say what they’re doing. Someone posting a Story, scrolling Reels or replying to a friend gets the same dot as someone about to answer you. Instagram also doesn’t publish how soon the dot turns into a time stamp after a person closes the app, so treat it as a rough guide. Inside a chat, Instagram’s Help Center says you can also see activity such as “In the chat” or “In the camera”, which tells you more than the dot does.
Tip: Don’t follow up just because the dot is on. A second message ten minutes after the first reads as pressure; one clear message is easier to answer when they get to it.
Green things that aren’t the online dot
- A green ring around someone’s Story at the top of your feed: they shared it with their Close Friends list and you’re on it. The Story carries a “Close friends” label too.
- A green dot at the very top of an iPhone screen: that comes from iOS, not Instagram. It lights up while an app is using the camera, for example when Instagram’s Story camera is open. An orange dot means only the microphone is in use.
- A green camera or microphone icon in the top corner of an Android phone: Android’s own privacy indicator, with the same meaning.
- A green dot in Messenger or on Facebook: the same idea as on Instagram, someone active now, but it follows Facebook’s own Active Status setting.
How to hide your own green dot
Turn off activity status in Instagram’s settings, under Messages and story replies. Your dot and your “Active” time stamp disappear for everybody, and other people’s disappear for you. To hide it from just one account, restrict that account instead: a restricted account can’t see when you’re online.
An example
At 11pm you notice a green dot on a client’s photo in your inbox. It tells you they’re in Instagram, maybe watching Reels; it says nothing about whether they’ve opened the quote you sent that afternoon.
Questions people ask
Does a green dot mean they’re chatting with someone else?
No. It only means they’re active somewhere in Instagram. They might be posting, browsing the feed or messaging anyone at all, and Instagram doesn’t show which.
Why did someone’s green dot disappear?
Either they left the app, which swaps the dot for a note such as “Active 5m ago,” or they turned activity status off, which removes the dot and the note together. If you turned your own status off, every dot vanishes from your screen.
Can people see my green dot if I don’t follow them?
Only if you’ve sent them a DM. Your status is shown to accounts you follow and people you message, so a stranger who has never chatted with you can’t see when you’re online.
Does a business account show a green dot?
Yes. Business and creator accounts follow the same rules, so customers you’ve messaged can see when your account is online. If you’d rather they didn’t, the same activity status switch turns it off.
