What is a broadcast channel on Instagram?
A broadcast channel is a one-to-many chat on Instagram: the account running it posts updates, and members can react, reply to those messages and vote in polls, but can’t post messages of their own. Instagram’s help pages now simply call them channels, and a public account needs more than 1,000 followers to start one.

A broadcast channel is an Instagram chat where one account posts updates to everyone who joins; members can react, reply and vote in polls but can’t post.
How a broadcast channel works
- Who can start one: a public account with more than 1,000 followers. Instagram says the feature is being released gradually, so not every eligible account has it yet.
- Setting it up: in Messages, tap the compose button and choose to create a channel. You name it, pick its audience, and can set an end date and decide whether it shows on your profile.
- Getting members: when you send the first message, all your followers get a notification inviting them to join.
- Visibility: channels are public, so anyone on Instagram can discover them.
- What members can do: react to messages, reply to them, vote in polls and answer prompts. Only the people running the channel post.
- Running it with others: the creator is automatically the channel admin and can invite or remove collaborators and moderators. Instagram’s Help Center says a creator can invite up to 4 moderators, who can send and remove messages.
Instagram’s own suggestions for what to post are announcements, behind-the-scenes moments, event details and news of upcoming collaborations. Polls and prompts turn a channel from a noticeboard into something members take part in.
Channel, group chat, Close Friends or a note?
| Tool | Who posts | Who sees it | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Broadcast channel | The owner and admins | Anyone who finds it; followers are invited to join | Regular updates to a large audience |
| Group chat | Every member | Only the members | Planning with a small group |
| Close Friends Story | You | Your Close Friends list, for 24 hours | Casual updates for a chosen few |
| Note | You | Followers you follow back, or Close Friends, for up to 24 hours | A one-line update or question |
Instagram has no official way to DM all your followers at once, and tools built on Meta’s API can’t do it either. A channel is the nearest thing: one message reaches everyone who joined, and nobody has to be messaged one by one.
Using a channel for a business
- Restock and launch reminders, sent the moment the product goes live.
- Polls that settle real decisions, such as which colour to bring back or which day suits a workshop.
- Behind-the-scenes updates that would clutter the grid.
- Event details for people who have already said they’re coming.
Three cautions. Channels are public and discoverable by anyone on Instagram, so a discount code posted there isn’t exclusive. Because members can’t start messages in the channel, customer questions still arrive as ordinary DMs and need answers like any other. And if you share organic branded content in a channel, Instagram’s Help Center says you must use the paid partnership tool to show the commercial relationship.
An example
A sneaker shop’s channel posts “Restock drops Friday at 10am, sizes 7 to 11” with a poll on which colour to bring back. Members vote and react, and anyone with a sizing question sends the shop a normal DM.
Questions people ask
Who can create a broadcast channel on Instagram?
A public account with more than 1,000 followers, according to Instagram’s help pages. The feature is still being released gradually, so an eligible account may not see the option yet. A private account can’t start one.
Can members send messages in a channel?
Not new ones. Members can react to what the channel posts, reply to those messages, vote in polls and answer prompts, but the account running it leads. To ask something privately, a member sends a normal DM.
Do all my followers get notified about a new channel?
When you send the first message, Instagram notifies all your followers and invites them to join. After that, updates go to the people who joined, so make the first message a good reason to tap join.
Is a broadcast channel the same as a group chat?
No. In a group chat everyone can post and only members can see it. In a channel only the people running it post, members respond with reactions, replies and votes, and the channel itself is public.
Can I set a channel to end on a date?
Yes. Instagram lets you choose an end date when you create a channel, which suits a channel for a single event, a launch or one course intake.
