Tips before you post

  1. Photograph before the colour starts, then once more at the peak. The clean before and the full-colour after make a good two-photo post.

  2. Put the phone in a zip bag or a waterproof pouch, and wipe the lens before each shot. Wet gulal on glass makes everything look foggy.

  3. Shoot in daylight with the sun behind you. Powder thrown into the air catches the light best in the middle of the morning.

  4. Ask before posting someone’s coloured face, especially friends who would not want to be tagged. Everyone looks different after the first bucket.

  5. A short video of the powder in the air often does better than a still. Tap record, then throw.

  6. Tag the person who ambushed you. It is half the fun of the post and they will probably reshare it.

“Comment COLOURS and I'll send it to you in a DM.”

What they get

my Holi checklist: skin-safe colours, what to wear, how to protect phones and hair, and the gujiya recipe my family swears by.

DMFast answers each comment and sends the DM for you. The first message asks them to reply, then the link follows, because Instagram allows no links in that first message.

Questions people ask

What is a good short Holi caption?

Keep it to one picture’s worth of detail: a blue thumbprint, a bucket, a stained white kurta. A line such as “I left the house as one colour and came back as all of them” does the work in one breath.

When is Holi?

Holi falls on the full-moon day of the Hindu month of Phalguna, usually in March. The exact date moves each year with the lunar calendar, so check a calendar for the current year. Holika Dahan, the bonfire, is the evening before.

What should I wear to take good Holi photos?

White or very light clothes show colour best and make the brightest photos. Wear something you do not mind ruining, because the stains often stay. Photograph the outfit before the fun begins.

How do I protect my phone at Holi?

Use a sealed waterproof pouch or a zip bag, keep the lens clean and carry a microfibre cloth. Powder and water can get into charging ports, so do not charge it until it has dried properly.
