Tips before you post
Shoot at blue hour, the twenty minutes after sunset, when the sky is still deep blue and the windows have lit up. City photos look their best then, even on a phone.
Include a person or a small detail such as a bike, a tram or a street sign in the frame. A skyline alone can look like every other skyline.
Look for reflections in puddles, shop windows and glass towers. A wet street after rain gives you double the light for free.
Tag the neighbourhood and the cafe or the market, not only the city. Local tags reach people who are planning where to walk or eat.
A short clip of traffic, crowds or a street musician often says more than a still. Add the sound and keep it under fifteen seconds.
Be careful about showing strangers’ faces in crowded shots. Photograph from behind, or choose a wide frame where nobody stands out.
Questions people ask
What is a good caption for a city photo?
Describe the scene in front of you: the crowd, the rain on the road, the skyline or the corner cafe. A line about one real detail, such as the smell of a market or the noise of a tram, feels more genuine than a general one.
When is the best time to take city photos?
Early morning for empty streets, golden hour for warm light on buildings, and blue hour just after sunset for glowing windows. Rain also helps, because wet surfaces reflect lights and add depth.
Should I tag the city or the neighbourhood?
Tag both when you can. The city helps people searching broadly, while the neighbourhood, cafe or market reaches people who live nearby or are planning a visit.
How do I photograph crowded streets without showing strangers’ faces?
Shoot from behind, from above or from far enough away that no face is sharp. Slow shutter or motion blur effects also turn a crowd into a soft stream of movement.
