A WhatsApp link and QR code for your number

Enter your number with its country code and, if you like, a first message. You get a wa.me link that opens a WhatsApp chat with you, plus a QR code for it. Copy the link into your Instagram bio or a Facebook post, or print the code. The tool runs in your browser, so the number and message stay on your device.

How it works

  1. 1Enter your number

Start with the country code, then the number. Spaces, dashes and brackets are removed. A number that starts with 0 is rejected, because the 0 is replaced by the country code.

  2. 2Write a first message

Optional. It appears in the chat box for the person who opens the link. Emoji, line breaks and symbols such as & and # are encoded so they survive the trip.

  3. 3Copy or test the link

The link is shown in full. Copy it, or press Open to test to see the chat open on your own phone, which is the only way to confirm the number is on WhatsApp.

  4. 4Download the QR code

Choose colours, margin and size, add a line such as “Scan to message us on WhatsApp”, and save a PNG or an SVG. The code holds the same link.

How the number has to be written

A wa.me link wants the country code followed by the number, as digits only. No plus sign, no spaces, no brackets, no dashes, and no 0 in front of the local number. People write numbers with all of those, so the tool strips them and shows you what it ended up with and which country the first digits belong to. If that country is not the one you meant, the country code is wrong.

How it is writtenWhat goes in the link
07700 900123 (UK, local)Rejected: no country code. Use 44 7700 900123
+44 (0)7700 900123447700900123 (the (0) is dropped)
+91 98765-43210 (India)919876543210 (plus and dash removed)
+1 (415) 555-0132 (US)14155550132 (brackets and dashes removed)
0044 7700 900123447700900123 (the 00 dialling prefix is dropped)

The tool also warns when a number does not fit its country: numbers that start with 1 have ten digits after it, and Indian numbers have ten digits after 91. It cannot know whether a number is registered on WhatsApp, so always press Open to test.

A message that is already typed

Anything you put in the message box is added to the link after ?text=, percent-encoded: a space becomes %20, a new line %0A, & becomes %26, # becomes %23 and + becomes %2B. Without that, an & or # in your message would cut it off. The person who opens the link sees the message in the chat box and can edit it or send it as it is. Nothing is sent until they press send.

  • Make it say what they want: “Hi, I’d like to book a table for 4 on Saturday” beats “Hello”.
  • Put a keyword at the start if you sort incoming chats, such as “[Reel] Is the course still open?”, so you can tell which post sent them.
  • Keep it short. A long message makes a denser QR code that is harder to scan from a distance.
  • Never put anything private in it. The text sits in the link and in the QR code in plain form.

Using the link on Instagram and Facebook

Paste the link into your Instagram bio, your link-in-bio page, a Facebook post or an event description. On a printed poster or a shop window the QR code does the same job for people standing in front of it. For a business the link is the shortest route from “I saw your post” to a conversation.

Tip: DMFast works with Instagram professional accounts and Facebook Pages. It does not connect to WhatsApp, so this link is just a way to send people to a chat you answer yourself. To answer comments and DMs on Instagram and Messenger automatically, that is what DMFast does.

For the exact current rules of WhatsApp’s own links, see its Help Center article “How to use click to chat”. WhatsApp can change them, and its article is the source to trust over this page.

Questions people ask

Is this WhatsApp link generator free?

Yes, with no sign-up and no limit on links or codes. It is made in your browser and your number and message are not sent to us.

Why does it say my number starts with 0?

A local number starts with 0 and no country code. A wa.me link needs the country code instead, such as 44 for the UK, 91 for India or 1 for the US. Replace the 0 with the code, then check the country shown under the box.

Does the person have to save my number first?

The link opens a chat with the number directly. They do not need to add you as a contact first. They need WhatsApp installed and a number that is on WhatsApp, and you can test that with Open to test.

Can I use it for WhatsApp Business?

The link is the same shape for any number. If the number is registered on WhatsApp Business, the link opens a chat with it. Open it on a phone to check before sharing.

Will the pre-filled message send itself?

No. It appears in the box of the chat that opens, and the person presses send. They can change it first.

Can I make the link shorter?

The number-only version is as short as it gets. A pre-filled message makes the link longer because spaces and symbols become longer codes. A link shortener can hide the length, but it adds a middleman and may add tracking.
