An Instagram DM link and QR code
Type your username and you get an ig.me link that opens a conversation with your Instagram account, plus a QR code for it. You can add the optional ref label that Meta documents for telling links apart. It is made in this tab. This page also says plainly what Meta does and does not document about these links.
How it works
1Enter your username
Type it with or without @, or paste a profile link. The tool checks it against Instagram’s rules: letters, numbers, periods and underscores, 3 to 30 characters, no double or end periods.
2Add a ref, or skip it
A ref is a short label added to the link, such as bio-link or poster-1. Only letters, numbers, - _ and = are allowed. If nothing reads it, leave it empty.
3Copy and test
The link is shown in full. Open to test on a phone to see the conversation open. Meta says ig.me links are not supported on Instagram Web, so a desktop test may not work.
4Save a QR code
Choose colours, margin and size, add a line such as “Scan to message @yourname”, and save a PNG or an SVG with the same link inside.
What Meta documents about ig.me links
The facts below come from Meta’s developer page “ig.me Links”, in the Instagram messaging section of its Instagram API documentation. The page showed “Updated: Jun 30, 2026”, and was read on 7 October 2026.
- ig.me is “a shortened URL service operated by Meta that redirects users to a conversation in Instagram”.
- The format is https://ig.me/<USERNAME>, where the username is the handle of the Instagram professional account. That is the form this tool builds.
- Someone who follows the link goes to a new thread, or to the existing one if they have messaged the account before.
- A message that opens this way shows a note to the person that they opened the conversation from a link, and the account is told they used the link once they send a message.
- The only limitation listed is that ig.me links are not supported on Instagram Web.
- Meta suggests QR codes on product packaging, billboards, shop windows and similar places, and links on a Contact Us page or in an SMS.
What the ref label does, and what it needs
The same page says a link can end in ?ref= followed by a value. The value can be up to 2,083 characters, and only letters, numbers, hyphens, underscores and equal signs are supported. Meta lists three uses: telling links in different channels apart, tying an Instagram user to a session or account in an outside app, and sending the person to specific content in the account.
The label does nothing by itself. Meta describes it as data passed to the account’s messaging app in a webhook notification, the message the platform sends to software the account owner has connected. For an account that uses only the Instagram inbox, the page describes nowhere the label would show up. When a conversation already exists, Meta says opening the link also resets the 24-hour window for replying, and the app receives the ref.
Meta also suggests setting up Icebreakers, the starter questions on a new chat, and giving each one its own ref value, so what someone taps tells you where they came from.
What is not documented
- A way to pre-fill the message text. Meta’s m.me page for Facebook lists a text parameter. The ig.me page lists none, so this tool does not offer one.
- The longer https://ig.me/m/<username> form that many guides use. It is not on the page, so the tool builds the documented shorter form.
- Any behaviour for a personal account. The page speaks only about Instagram professional accounts, so test it on yours before printing.
Tip: When people reach you by link or QR code, the first thing they usually send is a message you answer by hand. DMFast can answer the common ones, such as DM keywords like PRICE or HOURS, on a professional account.
Questions people ask
What is an ig.me link?
It is a short address that Meta runs. According to Meta’s documentation it redirects people to a conversation with an Instagram professional account. Put it in a bio, a website, an email or a QR code.
Is the ref required?
No. https://ig.me/yourname works on its own. The ref is an optional label for software that receives your account’s messages, and Meta describes it only as data passed on to that software.
Does it work on desktop?
Meta’s documentation lists ig.me links as not supported on Instagram Web. Test and share it for phones, where people use the app.
Can I pre-fill the message?
Not documented for ig.me, so this tool does not try. If you need pre-written text in the link, the WhatsApp link generator supports it.
Why use this instead of my profile link?
A profile link lands on the profile, and the person must find and tap Message. This link opens the conversation. Use the profile link to gain followers and the DM link to start conversations.
