Paste it into the chat
To send a link in an Instagram DM, copy the web address, open the chat, paste it into the message box and tap send. Instagram turns a full address into a link the other person can tap, usually with a preview showing the page’s title and image. DMs are one of the few places on Instagram where a link works: in a caption or a comment, the same address is plain text.
- Copy the link. In a browser, press and hold the address bar and choose Copy; in most apps, it’s under Share, then Copy link.
- In Instagram, open your messages and pick the conversation, or start a new one.
- Press and hold in the message box and tap Paste.
- Give the preview a moment to load, add a line saying what the link is, and tap send.
On a computer
On instagram.com, open Messages from the menu on the left, choose the chat, paste the link with Ctrl+V (Cmd+V on a Mac) and press Enter. It arrives as a tappable link on the other person’s phone, just as if you’d sent it from the app.
Tip: Say what you’re sending. “Here’s the size chart you asked about” followed by the link gets opened; a bare link from an account the person barely knows looks like the scams they’ve been warned about.
When a link won’t send or won’t open
Instagram doesn’t explain every failed message, but most trouble with links comes down to a handful of causes:
| What happens | Likely cause | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| The link arrives as plain text | Part of the address is missing, or a space has crept in | Copy it again from the browser’s address bar instead of typing it |
| The message won’t send | A weak connection, a temporary limit on your account, or a link Instagram treats as unsafe | Retry on a steady connection; if only messages with that link fail, check the site before trying again |
| They say it never arrived | It’s in their message requests, or filtered into the spam folder there | Ask them to check Requests, or put the link somewhere they already look |
| The link opens an error page | The page is private, deleted or moved, such as a file that isn’t shared publicly | Open it in a private browser window yourself before sending |
| Sending suddenly stops working | You sent the same link to many people in a short time, which looks like spam | Stop for a day or two, then write to people one at a time |
A shortened link hides where it goes. To someone who doesn’t know you, that looks the same as a phishing link, so send the full, readable address when you can.
Why the first DM after a comment has no link
Run a “comment LINK and I’ll DM it to you” post and you’ll notice the first message never contains the link. That’s Meta’s rule, not a setting you missed. If someone hasn’t written to you, the only way an automated tool can message them is a private reply to their comment, and Meta allows one per comment, sent within 7 days, as plain text. Instagram and Messenger allow no links or buttons in it.
The link comes after the reply. When the person answers, even with one word, the normal messaging window opens: for the next 24 hours the business can send links, cards with buttons and anything else. If they never answer, that first message is the end of the conversation.
- They comment the word under your post or Reel.
- Your public reply under the comment says a DM is on its way.
- The first DM, in plain text, asks a question: “Want the link? Reply YES.”
- They reply, which gives you 24 hours to answer.
- The link arrives, as a card with a button or as a link in a message.
Tip: Make the answer effortless. “Reply YES and I’ll send it” is easy to answer; “let me know if you’re interested” is easy to ignore, and without a reply the link can’t follow.
There’s a second reason to keep that message plain: people who don’t follow you receive it in their message requests, next to messages from strangers. A short note that names what they asked for reads like an answer, not spam.
Sending links to customers as a business
When you type a reply yourself in the Instagram app, you can paste a link into any conversation, subject to the spam filters above. Automated replies are held to tighter rules. From instant replies to keyword bots, they can only reach someone within 24 hours of that person’s last message; the single private reply to a comment, covered above, is the exception.
- Inside those 24 hours, an app can send a link card: a title, an image and a button that opens your page.
- After 24 hours, automation can’t reach them until they write again. Meta’s human agent tag lets a real person answer a support question for up to 7 days, but not send promotions.
- Use a tracked link if you want to know who opened it. A plain address tells you nothing about taps.
- Never send a payment link to someone who didn’t ask for one. Unrequested payment links are a common scam, and a real customer will wonder whether yours is one.
In DMFast, a comment keyword sends the plain-text DM first and the link card once the person replies. On Instagram, the “Only send to followers” option can hold the link back until they follow you, and tracked links count the taps.
Other places a link works on Instagram
| Where | Tappable? | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| A DM | Yes | One person, or everyone who asks with a keyword |
| Your bio | Yes, up to five links | Pages people should always be able to find |
| A Story | Yes, with the link sticker | A link that matters for the next 24 hours |
| A caption | No | Saying where the link is: in your bio, or in the DMs |
| A comment | No | Pointing people to your bio or inviting a DM keyword |
That’s why so many posts ask for a comment instead of saying “link in bio”. A Reel can’t hold a working link, but the DM it leads to can, and it goes straight to the person who asked.
Staying safe with links in DMs
- Be wary of links from accounts you don’t know, especially ones about a prize, a copyright complaint, verification or a problem with your account. These are the usual openings for phishing.
- Before you log in on a page you reached from a DM, read the address bar. A real Instagram login sits on instagram.com; a lookalike spelling is a red flag.
- As a business, send links only to people who asked for them, and say what each one is.
- Sent the wrong link? Press and hold the message and tap Unsend. Instagram also lets you edit a sent message for a short time afterwards.
Questions people ask
Can you send a clickable link in an Instagram DM?
Yes. Paste a full web address into the chat and Instagram makes it tappable, usually with a preview. Elsewhere on Instagram, links work in your bio and on a Story’s link sticker, but not in captions or comments.
Why doesn’t my link show a preview?
Previews come from information the website supplies, such as a title and an image, and some pages don’t supply it or load too slowly. The link still works without one. Paste the full address and wait a moment before you send.
Why can’t a business DM me the link as soon as I comment?
Meta allows a business one private reply to your comment, as plain text, within 7 days. Links and buttons have to wait until you answer it, which gives the business 24 hours to send them.
Will someone who doesn’t follow me see my link?
They’ll receive it, usually as a message request, which waits in a separate folder until they open and accept it. Say who you are and why you’re writing in the same message, so the request looks worth opening.
Can I send a link to all my followers at once?
No official tool can DM all your followers, and sending one link to many people quickly can get your messaging limited. You can share to several chats at a time, but to reach everyone, put the link in your bio or a Story and invite people to ask for it.
