An Instagram QR code for your profile

Type your username, or paste your profile link, and you get a QR code that opens your Instagram profile when someone scans it. Choose the colours, add a line such as “Scan to follow @yourname” underneath, and save it as a PNG for print or an SVG for a designer. It is made in this tab and nothing is sent anywhere.

How it works

  1. 1Enter your username

Type it with or without the @, or paste your profile link. Anything after the username, such as tracking text from Share, is dropped. The tool checks the name follows Instagram’s rules.

  2. 2Check the link

The full address appears under the box, shaped like https://www.instagram.com/yourname/. Press Open to test and make sure it lands on the right profile before you print anything.

  3. 3Style the code

Pick the code and background colours, the margin, the image size and the error correction. A contrast check tells you when the colours are too close for phones to read.

  4. 4Download it

PNG has the code plus your optional line of text and a size you choose up to 2048 px. SVG is the code alone, so a designer can scale it to a poster without it going soft.

What is inside the code

The code holds one thing: the web address of your profile. It is a plain link, not a special Instagram format. Anyone with a phone camera can scan it, and a phone that has the Instagram app will usually offer to open the profile there. That is why it keeps working when you change your photo, your bio or what you post.

It does not keep working if you change your username, because the address contains the old one. Make a new code after a rename, and think before you print a thousand stickers with a name you might change. The code also has no expiry date and no way of counting scans. If you need to know how many people scanned it, put a tracked link inside a code instead of the plain profile address.

Make a code that scans on the first try

  • Keep it dark on light. The check compares how bright the two colours are, and a code lighter than its background warns you, because some scanner apps cannot read that.
  • Leave the margin at 4 squares, the width the QR standard asks for. Margins of 0 to 1 square often scan on a clean white card, but fail when the code sits on a busy photo.
  • Leave error correction on Medium unless the code will get dirty, scuffed or covered. Each step up lets more of the code be damaged, but adds squares, so each square is smaller at the same printed size.
  • Short usernames make simple codes. A 12-letter name gives a smaller grid than a 30-letter one, and a simpler grid is easier to read from further away.
  • Scan the finished design yourself, on an iPhone and an Android phone if you can, from the distance a customer would be.

Tip: Printing it? The PNG is drawn with a whole number of pixels per square so the edges stay sharp. If the preview says squares are under 3 px wide, make the image bigger or the code will be fuzzy.

Where an Instagram QR code earns its place

A QR code works best where typing a username would be a nuisance and the person is already holding a phone: a table card at a café, the back of a business card, a market stall banner, a receipt, the box a product ships in, a slide at the end of a talk. Pair it with the line “Scan to follow @yourname” so people know what it does, and add one reason to scan, such as “Daily specials”.

If you want people to message you rather than follow, the Instagram DM link generator makes a code that opens a chat instead of the profile. If you run a Facebook Page as well, the Facebook QR code generator does the same job there.

Questions people ask

Is this Instagram QR code generator free?

Yes. There is no sign-up, no watermark and no limit on how many codes you make. The code is built by your own browser, so there is no server to pay for.

Will the code stop working if I change my bio or photo?

No. It only holds your profile address, so the page it opens always shows your current photo, bio and posts. It does stop working for a new username, so make a fresh code after a rename.

Can I count how many people scan it?

Not with this code. It is a plain link to your profile, and nothing in the code reports scans. To count them, put a link that counts clicks inside the code. DMFast’s tracked links do this, and so do most link shorteners.

Can I put my logo in the middle?

This tool keeps the standard square pattern and does not add a logo, because anything laid over the middle can stop it scanning. If you add one yourself, choose High error correction, keep the logo small and scan the result on more than one phone.

Do I need a business account?

No. The code is only a link to your profile, so it works for any account whose profile people can open. What a visitor sees depends on your privacy settings, as it would if they typed your name into the app.

What is the difference between PNG and SVG?

PNG is a picture at one fixed size, up to 2048 px, and includes your line of text. SVG is the code on its own as shapes, so it stays sharp at any size and a designer can recolour it. Use SVG for posters and large prints.
