Instagram username generator

Type your name, brand or a few keywords and get 50 username ideas. Every one is in Instagram’s format: letters, numbers, full stops and underscores, 3 to 30 characters. The ideas are made in your browser, and only Instagram can say if one is free.

How it works

  1. 1Type a name or keywords

Your name, your brand or a few words about what you do. Accents are folded to plain letters, and anything that isn’t a letter or number is dropped.

  2. 2Choose a style and the characters

Clean, creative, short, playful or aesthetic, and whether full stops, underscores and numbers are allowed in the names.

  3. 3Browse the 50 ideas

Tap a name to save it, copy one, or press New batch for fifty different ones. The saved names can be copied together.

  4. 4Check each name on Instagram

The arrow opens that name’s page on Instagram in a new tab. Only Instagram can tell you whether a name is free, so confirm it there before you plan around it.

The format every idea follows

Each name is checked by code before it reaches you. It uses only lowercase letters, numbers, full stops and underscores, runs 3 to 30 characters, never has two full stops in a row, and never starts or ends with a full stop. That is the pattern we use throughout this site. We couldn’t open a Meta page that spells the rules out, so if Instagram refuses a name in its own field, its message is the final word.

The tool leaves out names made only of numbers and separators, since they say nothing about you. If you turn off full stops, underscores and numbers, you get letters only, joined with words like “studio” or “hq”.

Is it taken? What the link can tell you

We don’t look names up, because we can’t ask Instagram, and a guess would mislead you. The arrow next to each name opens instagram.com/that-name in a new tab. If it shows a real profile, the name is taken. If it says the page isn’t available, that doesn’t prove the name is free: the account could be removed, restricted or hidden from you. The reliable check is Instagram’s own username field when you edit your profile.

So treat the list as a source of ideas to try, not as reserved names. Save five or six you like, try them in order, and keep the one Instagram accepts.

Choosing one you won’t regret

  • Say it out loud. If you’d have to spell it every time on a call, simplify it.
  • Avoid look-alikes. A zero and the letter o, or an l and a 1, are easy to mix up when someone types your name from memory.
  • Keep it close to your name or your shop’s name on other platforms, so people find you by guessing.
  • Use full stops and underscores sparingly. One separator is readable, three is a puzzle.
  • Don’t bake in a year or a trend, like “2025”. They date quickly, and you may outgrow them.

Tip: Your display name is a separate field and can hold spaces and capitals. Put the plain-language part of your brand there, and keep the username short.

Questions people ask

What characters can an Instagram username use?

Letters, numbers, full stops and underscores. This tool also keeps names to 3 to 30 characters, with no two full stops in a row and no full stop at the start or end. Check any name in Instagram’s own field, which is the final judge.

Does this tell me if a username is available?

No. Only Instagram knows. The arrow opens the name’s page: a real profile means it’s taken, and a “not available” page doesn’t prove it’s free. Test it in your profile’s username field.

Why are the names always lowercase?

This site treats Instagram usernames as lowercase, so the tool generates them that way. Your display name is a separate field where you can use capitals.

Does my input get sent anywhere?

No. The names are made in your browser from word lists and a little arithmetic. There is no request to a server, and nothing is saved when you close the tab.

Can I get a username with my name if it’s taken?

Try adding a role or a place, like “maya.bakes” or “maya.leeds”, or use the creative style. A short word after your name is usually enough to make it unique.
